Hey,
I have done this for a little while and it wasn't until I realized there was a serious deeper problem did I take the step towards recovery. The fact that you realize it is wrong and that you want to stop is a step in the right direction.
Maybe there is something in your live that you need to let go of. Maybe it is unforgiveness, bitterness towards someone, etc. it depends on what you think about that hurts you to the point where you want to numb this pain. Cutting is no different from drinking, doing drugs, or whatever. We all use them to fill a void that only God can fill. We do them to ease the pain that only God can ease.
This is the way I got over it. First of all I would like to recommend a site to you that will help you
www.wayofthemaster.com. Now that website is actually a witnessing tool to try to help people turn to Christ but there is a method they use there that is good for even Christians to go over. The method is to go through all the ten commandments and see which one's you've broken. Realize that if you break anyone of these and you are condemned with a death sentence. Just like here in our justice system, you commit a crime and you will be convicted and then condemned. But thank God, we have a way out and all we have to do, all God really wants from us is to accept the free gift of salvation (accept our fine paid in full by Jesus), to stop breaking the law and to love God (because he loved you first). See which one of these three things you've not been able to comply with. Have you accepted Jesus's free gift of salvation? Have you stopped breaking Gods laws? Have you been loving God first and foremost? The bible actually says that the two greatest commandments are...
(
Matthew 22:37-40) Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Search your heart, is there any bitterness towards anyone there? Is there any unforgiveness there? Have you been breaking the commandments? Remember this piece of scripture...
(
Matthew 6:14,15)
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Also read (
Matthew 18:21-35)
It is hard but it is vital, or God will not forgive us, much less answer our prayers.
Remember, depression is a series of negative thoughts. These negative thoughts lead to negative emotions. These negative emotions lead to a negative will which then drives us to do negative actions which in time will ultimately lead us to a negative destination. In our case, death and eternal punishment.
But if we fill our minds with thoughts in line with the Word of God. We then begin to have godly thoughts which will lead to godly emotions which lead to godly will and then actions and eventually to our godly destination, with our Father in the kingdom of heaven.
Take captive every thought that comes into your head and see if it is in agreement with the Word of God...
(
II Corinthians 10:5) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
This is what is so vital in staying in the Word of God. It takes a word and a thought to change our thinking. All Satan does is SPEAK to us! He even uses the scriptures in the wrong place and in the wrong context or twists around the meanings of the scriptures to fool us. That's why he so easily tricks those who are not in God's Word. They wouldn't know the difference.
Search your heart. Obey the commandments, Forgive and then repent. Be reconcilled to whoever you have bitterness against (
Matthew 5:23,24), spend time in the Word and ask God to help you understand and apply the teachings to your heart so that it will change your way of thinking.
(
Philippians 4:8) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things
are honest, whatsoever things
are just, whatsoever things
are pure, whatsoever things
are lovely, whatsoever things
are of good report; if
there be any virtue, and if
there be any praise, think on these things.
(
Philippians 4:13) I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
(
Isaiah 54:17) No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue
that shall rise against thee in judgement thou shalt condemn. This
is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness
is of me, saith the LORD.
(
Isaiah 26:3,4) Thou wilt keep
him in perfect peace,
whose mind
is stayed on
thee: because he trusteth in thee.
Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH
is everlasting strength:
(
II Corinthians 4:8,9)
We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed;
we are perplexed, but not in despair;
Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
It helps to memorize little verses like those and to recite them out loud whenever a negative thought that doesn't agree with scripture comes into your head. That's how the Word of God is the sword that we use to fight Satan's attacks.
But also...
Don't beat yourself up over this. It is understandable and many have gone through or are still going through the same thing.
(
I Corinthians 10:13)
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear
it.
Remember that Satan is the one who condemns, but God only convicts leading to repentance.
May you be granted peace and deliverence from this sin
