Hi, I'm doing a study on denominations and was wondering if anyone has a good reference for me to be able to determine the different denominational beliefs and how they differ from a non-denominational view. Thanks[/quote

Confessional Lutherans take the book of Galations seriously and believe Agreement in Christian doctrine is Necessary before religious fellowship can be practiced . .

Thts one is inaccurate about the Anglican Church:

Date Founded as Destinct Denomination: Gradual Development also....Christians were in the British Isles before the Council of Whitby. We've been there since the 1st century. And the Council of Whitby established simply an adaptation of certain Roman ideas and customs and not a statement that the British Christians were under the Pope.

We "finalized" our autonomy with Henry VIII.

Founders: the Church Fathers for some reason were excluded. In addition, Queen Elizabeth wasn't much of a theologian (though Henry VIII was talented). As for the others listed, more in terms of liturgy and the notion of Scripture, Tradition, Reason (which is ancient and easily found in St. Augustine of Hippo), and less so now thanks to the Liturgical Movement.

Reformation Roots: English Reformation is correct, but it implies that we changed doctrines. We did no such thing.

Number of Adherents: We're up to 77< million. A few estimates put us at 80 million.

Major Churches in the USA: The Episcopal Church is our most common name.

Sacred Text: The Deuterocanon ("Apocrypha") is actually authoritative.

Inspiration & Inerrancy of the Bible: furthermore, we do hold that the Bible is inspired in all matters of faith and doctrine.

Angels: We hold that angels exist, that they are celestial, immortal beings who are the Host of Heaven. Some we know by name: Sts. Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel are the best known.

Satan and Demons: Satan is the Devil, who rebelled and was cast down from heaven, and many angels who went with him became demons. They all exist.

Mary: St. Mary is both the Christokos and Theotokos, the ever-Virgin, Blessed above all, Mother of God, and was taken bodily into heaven.

Body and Soul: we agree with both the Vatican Catholics and the Eastern Orthodox.

Original Sin: we agree with the Eastern Orthodox.

Free Will: we agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.

Atonement: we agree with the Eastern Orthodox and Vatican Catholics.

Means of Salvation: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.

Grace: we agree with the Vatican Catholics, although we aren't as dogmatic about it.

Predestination: in other words, single predestination; to heaven.

Preservation Once Saved: we disagree with the "Saved" theology as understood by Evangelicals. We can loose salvation at any time.

Good Works: Our works are made whole and can bestow grace and heal the soul and purify our nature so long as they are done in cooperation with the Holy Spirit.

End Times: we are Amillennialists.

Judgment: Particular judgment upon death. Final Judgment with all who have ever lived at the Last Day to determine whether heaven or hell will be experienced.

Heaven: we agree with the Vatican Catholics.

Purgatory: Denied, but we do believe in a place that souls go to after death that is not specifically heaven or hell.

The Church: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics.

Other Denominations: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics.

Other Religions: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.

Role and Type of Clergy: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics. We recognize deacons, priests, and bishops.

Ordination of women: yes according to Lambeth. Growing number of provinces accept women clergy.

View of Sacraments: we also agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox. Furthermore, while Holy Communion and Holy Baptism are considered greater ones, we do recognize the other five as major.

View of Baptism: we also believe that Baptism is a sacrament, is regenerative, it makes us worthy temples of the Holy Spirit to dwell with/in, initiates us into the Church Militant, and is the acceptance of the Holy Spirit.

View of Eucharist: Real Presence. Christ is physically and spiritually there. Exactly how, we leave that a mystery.

Other Practices: optionally, disciplines and devotions, commonly called sacramentals.

Prayer to Saints: accepted.

Icons and Images: accepted.

Tongues and Other Spiritual Gifts: we agree with the Eastern Orthodox and the Methodist/Wesleyan.

Sexuality and Gender: we agree with the Vatican Catholic and Eastern Orthodox.

Premarital Sex: we agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.

Adultery: Sinful.

Homosexual Behavior: officially sinful, though it is being hotly debated.

View of Marriage: we agree with the Vatican Catholics and Eastern Orthodox.

Same-sex marriage: officially opposed although hotly debated.

Divorce: we agree with the Eastern Orthodox.

Remarriage: accepted

Women in Church Leadership: accepted, although not universally practiced.

Gender Roles in Marriage: we agree with the United Methodist Church.

Abortion: opposed; debated.

Contraception: accepted.

Euchanasia: opposed.

Removal of Life Support: debatable.

Suicide: opposed.

Death Penalty: opposed.
