  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To All:

I have called the local synagogue to ask for the time of the Siddur this evening and also the type of attire they would prefer.

The woman on the phone asked if I was coming for the Bar Mitzphah (spelling?). I said no.

She told me that I would not be crashing the party if I decided to still come.
Is this true or would it be best to not go this evening?

Just thinking about attending makes me nervous (excitedly and fearfully). Realizing that I have to go in long sleeves and just observe everyone and everything is going to be a slight amount overwhelming, yet invitiing.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Nathan

By the way, the fear about the long sleaves comes from the fact that I'm in NC, and it's supposed to be 90 degrees today.

Does anyone on this forum live near here or am I all alone?

well, it is a rather long ceremony typically, you're looking at something like 4+ hours

I'd reccomend going to schul (synagogue) for your first visit, and down the road, after you've caught onto some of the HEbrew, etc... then going to a bar mitzvah. But heck, if you really wanna go, I suppose that's your call ;)

I wouldn't stop ya, I just wouldn't reccomend it yet.

The coolest thing I remember from the first Bar Mitzvah I went to, was the passing of the Torah scroll. The Rabbi gave it to the grandparents, who then passed it down to their children, who then passed it on to the child who was going through the bar mitzvah.

Quite a touching sight to see.

That clarifies why they're moving the service tomorrow back to 10 a.m.

I was joking with the receptionist about it being later for recuperation time, but it must be the truth.

I think I shall take your advice and wait though. I would feel like I was dishonoring the child and family by leaving early.
