Hi all,

I took my son to the sports injury specialist today to make sure he didn't have any fractures, and the good news is that he doesn't.

He has a torn ligament, 2nd degree. 67% (but to me it looked like it was hanging by a thread).

The doctor commented on my son being so double jointed and I asked my son to show him this thing he can do with his thumb. Usually people squeal when my son shows them this "thing" he can do (he can turn it around completely backwards), but this doctor looked at me with total concern.

He did a few more little tests and then told me that he thinks my son has Ehrles-Danlos Syndrome.

It's a connective tissue disorder that gets progressively worse as the person gets older. It can affect their internal organs, etc.

He has a doctor's appointment at 4:00 tomorrow so we can get all the necessary testing and find out for sure.

Please send up some prayers for him!

~Lainie

PS...my son is in an air cast now and thrilled that he doesn't have to use crutches anymore.

Hi Lainie,

First let me say that I'm very sorry to hear of this latest development. As you know you and your son are already in our prayers. I will notify the family about this newest development this evening.

His fall and the torn ligament may be a blessing in disguise. The earlier Ehrles-Danlos is diagnosed the greater the chance for improvement or staybility.

God bless and keep you and yours,
Doc

I appreciate the prayers, and I know my son does too.

Doc, the doctor said the same thing today, that his accident may've been a blessing in disguise. If he does happen to have this syndrome then I KNOW it was a blessing in disguise because my son's regular pediatrician has never suspected it.

In fact, my son has showed the entire doctor's office the crazy thing he can do with his thumb and they all just squealed and had him show it to the other nurses. LOL!

But I'm thankful that we'll know for sure soon and won't have to keep waiting in agony. I've been in tears ever since I looked up what it is on the internet.

I've already joined a support group for parents of children with EDS. Information is power.

One of the websites gave the symptoms, and yep, my son sure does have them. But some of them are every day things that you really wouldn't suspect as bad, especially for a child that really is double jointed (which is kind of a misnomer).

A sports injury doctor was the best person to unofficially diagnose this syndrome since they have more experience with it, so yes, a disguised blessing for sure.

Thanks again for the prayers!

Praying for your son Laine! He is able to do far above and beyond all we can ask or think!

Thanks Jon and Eila! I just found a different website and man, they all differ on the symptoms, treatments, tests, etc.

This one looks a little more encouraging and my son only has 2 of about 10 symptoms even for the mild case of EDS.

I'm just going to keep praying tonight, and I should know something tomorrow.

Hi once again Lainie,

I understand that you are confused and in a bit of emotional distress right now. However don't let this throw you into a tailspin. I say this because to start with, the normal diagnostic protocol will take a few days at the least to produce results.

The next thing that you must remember is that any fear or upset that you show will be seen by your son as much worse than you may see it. Right now neither of you need the upset.

As for the diagnostic procedure, it would be my guess that the blood work-up would come first. The results of that should indicate whats next.

You indicated that you have talked with two doctors. Would I be correct in assuming that, for the moment at least, the sports medician specialest is the primary care physician? Was the other doctor your son's pedo?

If you feel that you need more difinitave answers I would first suggest you get a second (or third) opinion. Also if any of the doctors that you choose, wish to do so, I can put them in touch with Loma Linda.

It would be best for you to contact me by e-mail or PM rather than here in the forums. Please know that you are welome at any time, and that my family and I are praying for you and your son. I look forward to hearing from you.

Your friend in Christ,
Doc

Linda Shelton's son, Nathan Moore, is missing. He has been missing since March 17 or 19.

There is more information of Balcksda.com under 3ABN Threads and Prayer Requests.

This is serious and needs every one's prayers. There is picture posted there also.

Hi Doc, thanks so much for your reply.

I decided to keep my son out of school today so I could make his appointment earlier in the day for the testing for this syndrome. I misspelled it in my earlier post....it's Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. You probably knew that already though.

We went in at ten and they took some blood and checked the elasticity on his skin. He has too much elasticity, but I think part of that is because he has a LOT of growing to do. The sports injury physician told me that according to his growth plates (from the x-rays from the hospital) that my son is going to be VERY tall.

He's already almost as tall as I am at age 12.

My son's regular pediatrician told me that in his 30+ years of practice that he had never even heard of this syndrome so they looked it up in the medical books.

He let me read the symptoms, etc., and I'm just not convinced at all that my son has this. He does not bruise easily, he cannot dislocate his bones easily (except in his fingers and toes), and his skin has never torn.

I'm really confident that the tests will come back normal.

I won't know anything until tomorrow some time.

I appreciate the prayers and I'll keep everyone posted.

And Franny, I wasn't aware that the Shelton's son was missing, that's really sad!! I'll definitely say a prayer that he is found and safe.

God bless,
~Lainie

Well Lainie, they say patience is a virtue. I've got pleanty of patience, its the waiting that I can't stand.

Sounds like my original statement, that it will take at least a few days to get an accurate diagnosis, is holding true. As you are finding out there are multipal things that need to be considered and checked.

I have plenty of patience...except when it comes to something like this affecting my children. Then....not so much.

The pediatrician told me that if the blood tests come back positive he will probably send us to the Children's Hospital in Little Rock, AR.

I was their oldest patient a few years ago....LOL. I know it's a good place and if there's help for my son, they'll have it.

He doesn't have a care in the world tonight. You'd think it was just any other day for him.

I still don't think he has this syndrome. The more I read about it, the more I'm convinced that he doesn't.

I'm still sending up prayers though, for sure!!

Thanks again Doc, you are such a big help!

Hi Lainie,

No need to appoligize for spelling or typos. I can truly relate. I tell everyone that I'm so slow on the keyboard that I really shouldn't ever make a mistake because each key stroke is well planed. GRIN On top of that I think my computer must be an athiest because it never agrees wth me. When it comes to spelling I guess that I really should get an updated dictionary. The one that I always have near the computer was printed in 1956. (And yes I bought it new.)

As for Ehlers-Danlos, would you believe that my 7th grade school teacher, as well as a later classmate had the last name of Ehler?

The family and I are praying for your son as well as for your whole family. Please keep us posted. Blessings.

Doc

I didn't expect to hear from my son's pediatrician today because he's a Sabbath keeper and his office is closed today, BUT they called and said my son does NOT have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

In fact, my son's blood test was BEAUTIFUL and he's very healthy!

Thanks for all the prayers and Doc, thank you so much for talking me through such a scary time!

God bless,
~Lainie
