Let me see if I understand. For a class you are required to retell a sacred story from the Bible. That sounds like a great assignment!

First of all, if there are any stories that are particularly meaningful to you, you should choose one of them. The parable of the Good Samaritan from Luke, the story of Tamar in Genesis 38, and the story of the Hebrew midwives at the beginning of Exodus are favorites of mine. But the last two are women's stories, so you might not feel as comfortable with them or understand them without the help of a wise older woman to explain a woman's understanding of them to you.

The stories of Paul and of Cornelius in Acts 9 and 10 are also favorites of mine, but to really tell them in a way that conveys their theological import you really have to know your scriptures well, preferable having the ability to read the original languages and know the parallel passages.

Stick to something simpler. One of Jesus' longer parables or something from the life of Joseph (the last part of Genesis) are excellent for a beginning storyteller.

We over at my house like to tell the story of Paul's shipwreck. There is an entire chapter in the Bible dedicated to this shipwreck story. Acts 27. The most sacred part is when Paul tells everyone "cheer up!" only the ship and all the cargo will be lost.

Is this a speech? If so how long and who is the audience?
