  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was reading an article today about Prince Charles marrying Camilla. It was saying that even if Charles becomes King one day, she can't be Queen. Her title would be "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall".

So then my wife says, "That doesn't make sense. Charles can never be king anyway because he had a divorce. That's why the Queen Mother was against him divorcing Diana. So Prince William is next in line to be King now."

So... what's the real deal here? Is it true that Prince Charles can never be king now that he's had a divorce?

Please and Thank You.

He can be king. The only way he couldn't be king is if the Queen disapproved of the marriage. The monarch can ban any of their relatives from getting married and she would have consulted the prime minister. Basically they have a say in royal marriages, they have to approve of them. If they don't approve then the only way he could marry Camilla would be for him to abdicate and then William would be next in line. As the Queen and PM have approved it though he can marry Camilla without giving up the throne.

As I understand it Camilla will be called Her Royal Highness Duchess of Cornwall (as Prince Charles is the Duke of Cornwall) after the marriage. Though when Prince Charles becomes king she will be called Princess Consort. I think she can be called queen if Queen Elizabeth agreed to it, however she hasn't and I don't think that'll change as many people are opposed to Camilla being called queen.

Although I believe Prince Charles has every right to be happy, I still think it's in some way rotten he's marrying the women that caused Princess Di such sorrow.

I agree...why marry her after all these years, anyways? I mean, they've been together forever it seems like, why change it up now?

I think he may have created a CF account, and got 'told' in Courting Couples that he was living in sin.

He and Camilla go way back to before Princess Diana and it wasn't exactly just Camilla causing the sorrow, Charles has his own brain and didn't have to have an affair with her. I'm happy they're finally marrying just a shame his proposal is 30 years later than it should have been.

I think Prince Charles should have married Camilla in the first place. The problem was she wasn't a virgin, and Prince Charles had to marry a virgin, and that is why he married Dianna. How sad for the 3 of them. Charles never really loved Dianna, and she did everything she could to acquire his love, but it was unrequited love. Sinful as it was, Charles always loved Camilla, but they couldn't be together.

I just wish them the best.

The Prince of Wales' divorce does not affect his constitutional position as heir to the British throne. I found the following on the British Monarchy's Official Website:
"Royal marriages in Britain are regulated by two statutes: the Act of Settlement (1701), and the Royal Marriages Act (1772). The 1701 Act of Settlement laid down that neither a Catholic nor a person marrying a Catholic could come to the throne. The Royal Marriages Act provides that the marriage of any lineal descendant of George II is invalid unless royal consent has first been obtained. However if the Sovereign does not give consent, a member of the Royal Family may, at the age of 25, signify to the Privy Council his or her intention to marry without the consent of the Sovereign. The marriage can then lawfully take place unless both Houses of Parliament expressly disapprove.

Beyond those acts, there are no requirements or regulations as to who a member of the Royal Family can marry."

And Princess Diana didn't cause him pain as well by having her affairs? Besides Charles is very happy being with Camilla, and his boys are happy if there dad is happy too. If it makes Diana's boys happy then I don't think his marriage to Camilla is "rotten" at all.

Actually, that was only part of the problem. The other difficulty is that Camilla wasn't born "high enough". Camilla was not a member of the aristocracy (like Lady Diana Spencer was) or a member of any Royal family.

I wish them all the best-it's about time they got married.
