I want to read the bible but i have a.d.d and i cant focus i get distracted very easy and i cant remeber what i read ive always had this problem im on meds for it but i really want to learn more about god for myself what do you think would be a better thing to do go take night classes or get a bible dvd what do you guys think would be the best way for me to learn:thumbsup:
I guess if you really feel like the problem is that you get distracted you could either read portions out loud or get the Bible on tape and follow along as it is read on tape. That might help. I would also encourage you to focus on smaller portions of scripture.

Once again this is such wonderful news, Mike! God bless you, my friend! And make sure that you KEEP GOING, and really get connected with the Lord - knowing with certainty that He is with you always, and actually dwelling (abiding) in you! Isn't that fantastic. It's true, so just believe it.

And this is amazing, cos you are one of the few I've seen on the forums I've been on who actually chose to grab a hold of the Lord - and is managing to follow through with this. Wow!!

Thankyou for Mike, Lord. Continue to open His eyes so he can see YOU in the words of Your Book. You love him SO much! By your Spirit reveal to him what You are saying as he reads. And please bless this Brother of mine more and more with every passing day.

Lotsa love from us both, Mike!

Mike, reading the things that you're saying is thrilling me, of course. But I'm also finding it very interesting what you're experiencing. You may not know that we cannot understand the Bible EXCEPT the Holy Spirit interprets it to us. Or reveals to us what it's saying. I've been in dialog for some time with a strong atheist who says he wants the truth. But when he reads the Bible he doesn't 'get' it at all. Doesn't understand. Discovers NO truth. Gets nowhere. He's neither looking for the truth like he claims, nor has the Spirit to help him.

So what I'm saying is that your attitude and approach to the Lord must be really good, or else I'd expect you'd NOT be getting so much from what you're reading. That is, the Holy Spirit is working in your life to enable you to learn from the words of John the Apostle. Isn't that fabulous! And there's nothing different for you to do. In fact the best thing is to take note of what your attitude and thoughts and feelings and approach are NOW, so you can keep doing them!

Because what happens is what I call 'life comes along'. Time passes, and things change, and all of a sudden you realise that you've slipped a bit, and have to get back on the path. That's why I'm suggesting you note what you're doing now. And keep going! Wow, man, this is all quite wonderful.

Bless you heaps as you keep reading, and making important life decisions!

Firstly, welcome to CF

If you have a heard time focusing, I recommend the DVD, that ways you can re-play it as many times as you need to until you understand it.

Remember though, GOD isnt looking for QUANTITY, but QUALITY. He would rather have 20 mins of time with you, while you read ONE verse of scripture, verses you trying to "cram" 20 minutes of several chapters. :)

Mike1515 I would recommend the DVD Bible as well. But as a person who has had an ADD problem similar to what you describe I can tell you The Princess Bride is right the best thing you can do is work on the trying to get quality of what your reading from the Bible and not how much you have read.

Something that worked very well for a friend of mine with ADD was to choose a portion of Scripture and memorize it. A Psalm, or a short passage from one of the Gospels. He struggled at first with the memorization, but he carried his dog-eared piece of paper around, pulling it out mulitple times each day to make sure he had it right. And once he got it, it stuck for good and all! He tries to memorize something every week. In time, he's built up a real storehouse of precious nuggets of the Word. And he says he finds himself turning to them more and more during the day.

If you don't have a dvd player, there are also audio tapes and CD's... you can check them out of the libraries.

I'm glad that taking notes is helping -- I do that in church too. Many people jot notes in the margins of their Bibles, or on the back empty pages.

Use your ability to hyperfocus to your benefit -- that might be the interactivity of the forum here, or researching topics... but I think working off of the computer will help immensely.

Use biblegateway.com, or studylight.org, and keep reading how people here analyze situations with scriptures. Ironically, you do end up reading a lot of the Bible this way!

When you pray, try pacing.

I also find that walking around reading the Bible out loud helps me stay absorbed in the content, and take it in with conviction.

Keep outflow going at the rate of input. When you learn something, tell someone.
