Sunday School can be monotonous for the teachers. Back a few years ago, we came up with a cute idea, anyone heard of it???

1) Take 66 Clothespins and write the books of the Bible individually on the clothespins with markers.

2) String up a line, yarn or twine works well, and attatch the clothespins in order.

3) Give the kids a few weeks to memorize the books in order, removing some here and there to see if they remember the missing ones.

4) After you think they have it, mix the clothespins up and select teams to try and put them back together in order.

Variations: You can make this last longer by seperating Old Testament and New Testament into seperate "sessions", this also makes it easier to get through.

Perhaps award prizes as the kids make progress.

This approach also works well for verses. Two or three words on each clothespin and the book and numbers on the final (or first) clothespin.

Hope this helps any of you tapped out teachers ;)

That is a great idea! Do you have any fun ideas for crafts and games with preschoolers? I work at a Christian school one day a week and sometimes it is so hard to keep them occupied, especially since I'm not the 'normal' teacher. Games and activity ideas would be great, if anyone has any!

One of the best lessons I ever participated in was when I was in Junior Church (4-6 grade) and we were studying the Israelites on their journey in the wilderness before they settled in the Promised Land. We built a Tabernacle out of styrofoam and posicle sticks and stuff like that. It was hands on, to scale as much as we could make it, and it took many Sunday's to accomplish. We learned about the people carrying the tabernacle with them and why they would set it up the way they did and such. It made me excited to wake up on a Sunday to go to Sunday School and that's something that, if you asked my parents, was an incredible task in and of itself. If you want more info about it just ask and I will get it to you.

It's important to keep kids interested, ESPECIALLY in today's fast paced world.
Well you can keep them interested. But you can't entertain them. They need to know about God not how to play a game. I'm a 10 year old kid that wants more than that. I want to see miracles happen....not the latest Veggie Tales video!

I'm sorry, but God didn't intend Christianity to be boring. They can have plenty of fun playing games that teach them Bible verses and the books of the Bible and so on and learn more than any of us will learn sitting in the service.

I know you say Veggie Tales is boing, but have you tried 'Friends and Heroes' as a cartoon - and you will get to see miracle there, from throughout the Bible. But it is very encouraging to see someone so young wanting to see miracles happen, so often people are happy just where they are. So keep pushing forward and chasing after what He has planned for your life.

I don't belive that games should be played. im a 10 year old child too.

Jesus talks about JOY, alot.... he was always talking about CHILDREN too. JOY+CHILDREN= fun... He never said children couldn't have fun... I used to be like you... I never wanted to play the games and just wanted to memorize the Bible verses and listen to the stories. But most kids want to play. There's nothing wrong with playing... and veggie tales teaches alot... I don't agree that in sunday school you should stick the kids in front of a tv for 45 minutes, but at home or in the nursery is great. Kids want to play... there's planty of games you can play and crafts you could do while learning about Jesus. That's all I was trying to say when I suggested the craft in the original post.

I don't like the idea of Veggie Tales.

well im not saying that the children cant have fun the problem is that we entertain instead of train kids in christ! kids come to church because of fun and games and movies...when they should come for radical prayer teaching and healings...children are just as powerfull and capapble of power in the holy spirit as adults they are the exact same just a little shorter!!!!!

Radical prayer, teaching and healing???? Okay, well... children do not need to be concerned with the evils of the world at the ages of 5 and 6 ( the veggie tale viewing age). At that age they will not comprehend healings and teachings that adults do. If you are ten years old, you're far ahead of your peers when it comes to what you can understand. Most ten year olds in our church don't understand what "radical healings" are.

I really don't understand why you're trying to start an argument about it. Sunday school teachers need ideas for games and activities to go ALONG WITH THEIR LESSONS. Something the young kids can do. They'll learn the rest when they're mentally old enough to do so. Until than, their minds need to be occupied after or before lessons given by sunday school teachers who KNOW what to teach them and how to teach them within their understanding. That's wonderful that you understand more.... but don't expect kids who don't to keep up with you. It's not going to happen... our world is too focused on making things easy and 45 minutes once a week or less isn't going to change that.

I'm sorry, but that's the way it is.

Ok if you want to do that make a crossward with your memary verse and they have to fill in the words!

What was so wrong with my original post idea in that light? Hun, did you read me post? It was about memorizing the books of the Bible in order. Do you know what that does for a child if learned early? It makes it a thousand times easier to find the Bible verses.

What good is looking up John 3:16 if you haven't the slightest clue where John is or if he's related to the other three Johns. It's ALL important... and if it isn't explicitly Christian activity, it's fellowship with other Christian children in a healthy enviroment. God isn't a stiff-necked religious fanatic. He's a loving father who wants His children to enjoy life purely. Not lock themslves up inside of a church memorizing verses. YES that IS important. Knowing God's word is vital, but it isn't everything. He didn't create us to memorize endless lists of verses. He created us to enjoy us... that's what a Creator... an artist, father, God did.... He created us, His CHILDREN.... to love God and love others. The two greatest commandments ever. It's hard to love others if you can't even play with them because your stuck in endless monotonous memory and stories mom and dad can tell you just as easily as your sunday school teacher. Church is fellowship of the Christian body and worship of God. You don't have to be standing in a pew, hands raised to worship, your head doesn't need to be bowed and you don't have to be listening to Bible stories. You can worship God and play hot potato at the same time. "Let the little children come to me and do not stop them, for this is my Father's Kingdom".... it's all about the innocence of a child. Innocence and play walk hand in hand.
