  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I find it hard to believe that we mingled with these beings en masse: it just isn't consonant with what we know of human nature. (But then again, I've also read William Golding's THE INHERITORS.) That's why I cling to the other interpretation of such research, namely:

Neanderthal genome yields insights into human evolution and evidence of interbreeding with modern humans

This study doesn't suggest interbreeding en masse; it suggests quite limited inbreeding, probably with humans early in the Out of Africa migration, when that population was small.

I'm not sure what you're referring to about human nature. As far as I know, humans will mate with just about anything that looks remotely human, and sometimes with things that don't.

(If I remember correctly, the question about this observation being explained by ancient structure in the African population is going to be settled by more recent work. I recall the answer, but not how they got it.)

LOL...:D

And humans aren't the only ones that have that problem.

Apparently the fallen extraterrestrial angels had that problem too.

"And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose." -- Genesis 6:1-2

"...and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown." -- Genesis 6:4

"... they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men ...." -- Daniel 2:43

"And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.' And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: 'I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' And they all answered him and said: 'Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.' Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And these are the names of their leaders: Semiazaz, their leader, Arakiba, Rameel, Kokabiel, Tamiel, Ramiel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens." -- Enoch 6:1-8

"And all the others together with them took unto them wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught men charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones." -- Enoch 7:1-6

"And in the twelfth jubilee in the seventh week thereof, he [Enoch] took to himself a wife, and her name was Edna, the daughter of Danel, the daughter of his father's brother, and in the sixth year in this week she bare him a son and he called his name Methuselah. And he was moreover with the angels of God these six jubilees of years, and they showed him everything which is on the earth and in the heavens, the rule of the sun, and he wrote down everything. And he testified to the Watchers, who had sinned with the daughters of men; for these had begun to unite themselves, so as to be defiled with the daughters of men and Enoch testified against (them) all." -- Jubilees 4:20-23

I'm not well-enough versed to say, but I've always considered assortative mating to be the main driving force behind evolution, not just in humans but all animals. It's the only mechanism that works for me, really.

Non-random mating (creatures with similar traits) is key to continual evolutionary progress. It weeds out the least survivable of a species, leaving the resulting mating pool smarter, healthier, more attractive; traits that increase one's survivability.

When a pitbull mates with a poodle, that is random mating and results in the loss of genetic information. It also applies to humans.

There's also the sad truth that people are mostly no darn good (see: European colonialism in the 18th century.)

Sexual selection is the driving force species propagation.
A pitbull mating with a poodle is not random, but selective, and no genetic information is lost, only recombined.

Dogs are dogs can only give birth to dogs.

Shock and awe.

If you ever see a dog give birth to a flying dog let me know.

Dogs will never give birth to flying dogs?!? Really? Are you a flying dog denier? Why do you hate science and meteors so much? Do you also deny flying fishes and squirrels?

Assortative mating has worked quite well for me -- married twenty years next April -- but it doesn't have all that much effect on evolution. It increases variance of a phenotype in the population, which makes selection somewhat more effective if it's acting on that phenotype, but it can only work on a small number of traits at a time, and all it will do is speed up a process that's going on anyway.

Non-random mating (creatures with similar traits) is key to continual evolutionary progress. It weeds out the least survivable of a species, leaving the resulting mating pool smarter, healthier, more attractive; traits that increase one's survivability.
No, it doesn't do any of those things, at least not in general. Tall people mate with tall people preferentially, and short people with short people. How does that improve the mating pool?

When a pitbull mates with a poodle, that is random mating and results in the loss of genetic information.
Two pit bulls mating with two poodles has exactly the same effect on genetic information as a pair of pit bulls mating with each other and a pair of poodles mating with each other. (And the mating between breeds stand a good chance of being healthier because of hybrid vigor.)

No. It's a recombination between two different haploid groups.
