I've been looking around for something to make that involves the Nativity scene. I've looked online, and I'm going to check a Christian store today. I also checked Michael's a week or so ago, but all they had for Christmas stuff was the secular crud like snowmen and reindeer stuff. Anybody have any ideas? It would help much for my church school class. Thanks!

I don't know if you have time for this, but on one of the very rare instances where I went to Sunday School as a child, we made tiny Nativity scenes which I still think were totally adorable.

There were three kinds of peanuts with little swatches of fabric around them as clothes and faces drawn on them, and triangles of popsicle sticks, flat sides glued so that we could stand them up on a table. We would glue the peanuts onto the bottom of the triangle. The Jesus peanut was one of those small peanuts (with only one inside) to distinguish him from Mom and Dad, and he would be inside a little egg cup cut from an egg carton for his manger. Then we would glue a little yellow star on top.

Even though I grew up in a fairly secular home, we did decorate for Christmas and those little popsicle stick Nativity scenes lasted for years. This might be a great idea for your class because they aren't too messy or big (so parents won't be mad or want to chuck them out), and each child will have his very own Nativity decoration to put up in his room.

Not sure what age range you're looking for but....

Free Printable Nativity for Christmas This would enable the children to build their own Nativity scene & bring it home as well.

Or, depending again on age range, you could get copies of a black and white icon of the Nativity for the children to color in. I remember helping out a church school class to do this actually. I know the book can be bought somewhere but I can't remember where. Tried looking for it and stumbled across it here: Orthodox Christian Icon Coloring Book

You can also do little nativity scenes that look like gingerbread houses using graham crackers, icing, and candy like spearmint trees. You use animal crackers for a few camels etc. You can improvise figures a variety of ways.

I don't know if this would be allowed, but if you had some big-ish but inexpensive and stiff icon prints, you could make a nativity scene in a shadow box by cutting out the appropriate figures and affixing them to bases, and having pre-prepared backgrounds, or the kids could colour them.

I've made nativity scenes using stickers for pre-schoolers - you can get the stickers from any Christian book-shop usually.

These are fun, and great because they are relatively inexpensive if you print them out on home on good paper.:

Crèchemania Store

You just have to search the site a bit.

This one is specifically for children, and the pdf is free:

The Byzantine Creche is nice, but i've made it and it's quite difficult:

Ooooh, you all are treasures!!! You've given me so many good ideas! I can't wait to delve into them. I'm planning to make this most of the month, so the candles thing and other stuff can work. I'll have to look into all of this!! Thanks sooooo much!

Oh, and I teach the 5-year-olds thru the 8-year-olds.

aw, 5-8 is the age group I've always helped out with! Have fun!!! I love that age range...I mean I love kids in general, but at that age they're so wide-eyed, soak everything in, and ask lots of questions. It's so rewarding!

One thing my son's Church school class did was make Icon ornaments. They took printed (non blessed obviously) Icon cards and cut out the key portion in a circle then glued it to the middle of a silver cup-cake liner and added a ribbon/pipe cleaner loop. Other things they did included putting an Icon in one of those pre-made ornaments that have a space for a picture (like a clear ball or snow globey thing) and the like. He made 3 or 4 and we gave them out to some of our non-Orthodox family members as gifts too.

You've brought back memories from when I was little. I remember making ornaments like that in Church School back in the day!

Great idea! You've just helped me out on Christmas ornaments! How about printing icons from the net, cutting them out and putting them on those pre-made ornaments? Could that work?

It should. I remember decoupaging printed paper icons on styrofoam/pre-made ornaments. My parents actually still have mine from back in the day.
