Someone at the watering hole started watching nascar exuberantly...and then he started to complain about the gas prices a few minutes later.

I thought this to be strange, and I thought to myself; can one within legitimacy complain about oil prices while supporting the excessive wasting of it?

Probably not a big issue.

IMO, I think they should shut the nascar craze down.

Shutting down Nascar (or Formula 1 or Indy car racing etc.) isn't really going to have much effect on oil, when you look at the grand scheme of things. Having said that I'll never understand why Nascar is so popular in the US as they're just racing round a big oval! Formula 1 isn't any better, as these days it is just a precession. While big money is still involved in these "sports", I'd imagine they will be one of the last things to disappear once the oil runs low.

i wonder how much gas all professional racing consumes...

A lot, but I'm pretty sure the amount is insignificant to the amount of petroleum available. What would be good is if the big racing officials got together and banned oil from their sports, forcing the teams to produce electric racing cars. This would improve the technology of electric cars in no time. In formula 1 a lot of the technological breakthroughs they have made over the years eventually get seen on your average road car.

That's a really, really good idea.

What about the gas consumed by the folks driving to the races? I dunno about F1, but from what I've observed, the average NASCAR fan doesn't drive a Toyota Prius or Honda Insight. ^_^

Ah yes, the Toyota prius, living proof that people will buy dog crap if you sell it as environmentally friendly.

That's a really, really good idea.

Why thank you! :)

I have to agree. My Honda Fit gets as good of gas millage as the Prius on the freeway. Heck, people have modified the Prius to get 100+ miles per out of it. It really is a car that needs to be redone because we can do so much better.
