  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Nanotechnology is a branch of science and engineering devoted to the design and production of materials, structures, devices and circuits at the smallest achievable scale, typically in the realm of individual atoms and molecules. The ability to engineer matter at that scale has the potential to produce a vast array of new technologies that could influence everything from computers to medicine. Already, dozens of products containing nanoscale materials or devices are on the market.
In a sample of 1,015 adult Americans, only 29.5 percent of respondents agreed that nanotechnology was morally acceptable.

Apparently, it's peoples religious beliefs that have them thinking this is an 'immoral technology'. What? What does one have to do with the other?

I could have thought that guy was looking so dumbfouded at all those groupies voting for Obama!

Really, we have been witnessing the incredible lack of morality of society to possess even the technology it has had over the last 20 years. Science has given us fishing sonar. What did people do with it? People who before had no interest in fishing when they had to learn how to find them, suddenly went out and bought boats equiped with this technology and ignored the limit of fish allowed by law. The result? Fished out waters.

Science gave us miniature cameras and sound recorders. We all know what has happened to our society as a result of this technology being available to the general public.

To make this technology undetectable is to remove any privacy each of us now has. 24/7 Think about it. One might think, "What would be so interesting about me to remove my privacy and make my life's private moments an open book to the public?" You would be suprised.

IMHO technology is not immoral, how we use it can be

I completely agree. Nanotechnology can be a great scientific achievement. But there will be some who develop inappropriate usages from it.

You know, I am going to make an assumption here and if I'm wrong please feel free to correct me. Though the general comment will still be valid, it just may not apply to you. From your comment about Obama, it would appear that you consider yourself a conservative Republican.

What is odd is how when people talk about guns talking lives, conservative Republicans are very quick to point out there is nothing immoral about guns, it is the way people use them that can be immoral. They feel that despite the fact that some people abuse guns should have no bearing on the availability of guns.

How odd, then, that you take the opposite approach above with these technologies. This double standard is used with nanotechnology, stem cells, or the above mentioned technology the finger is pointed at technology being immoral and used to "play God" rather than people being immoral in the way they attempt to use it. They then claim that this technology might be abused so we must severely restrict the technology.

Well, if thats the case why not sell tiny EMP bombs in vending machines? Then whenever you suspect you're being watched you just turn off anything you don't want fried and set 'em off. Foolproof unless you've got a pacemaker...in which case you can simply remote detonate them from a safe distance.

Nanotechnology is probably the single greatest advance in science. If we can develop it and control it, our ENTIRE world changes, top to bottom. It doesnt matter if you're in a 3rd world country or living on 5th Avenue, our whole world will change.

With this technology, we could truly reduce our impact on this planet to near zero. We would have NO trash whatsoever as all trash could be processed via nanites and turned into new things with no waste. Our technology will, at that point, grow by leaps and bounds that are absolutely unimaginable today,

The absolute pinnacle of this technology that I can see (Actually one of the two) are smart factories and implants. The factories are composed of containers of nanopaste with a programming transponder thrown in and the whole mess dumped on a landfill, turning everything in that landfill into something new and useful. The nanite implants are small factories implanted into your body that produce nanites specifically designed to work symbiotically with your body, eliminating toxins, waste, cancers, repairing damage, and healing tissue.

This is one of the most fascinating areas in science today

Nanotechnology is just a fancy word for witchcraft. Tiny little things that I can't see doing impossible things? It's obviously not coming from God, so that leaves only one other source.

Lol! Burn the witches!!! Oh wait...nevermind.

I was going with "witches were burned at the stake...".

My boyfriend is a vampire. :p

Ah, I see. But if he should happen to suck somebody who has those little nanocritters crawlin' around in them, then he would become a witch too. Better keep both stakes handy just in case.
