Jehovah is a hybrid of YHVH and ADONAI. The vowel points of Hebrew from ADONAI were placed in between the Y H V H. And the Yod was changed to a J. It would be like taking your name and your brother or sister's name, removing the vowels from yours and inserting the vowels from your brother or sister's name into yours. Voila - you now have a new name.

I recall Adonai is the name of a canaanite demon.
Adonai is the Hebrew for 'Lord', it is found in the bible over 400 times.

Here is an example found in Exodus

17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, (this is from YHVH)

which thou hast made for thee to dwell in , in the Sanctuary, O Lord, (this is Adonai)
which thy hands have established .

I really don't care if its found in the bible or not. Mistranslation happens. Look the name up.

Baal also means "Lord". Would YHVH want to be called the same thing as Baal and Adonis? I think not. But I've been wrong before.
The distingtion is usually made with adding 'my' to Adon or Adonai. My G-d, spoken by one of his people means the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Ba'al may mean lord, but it means foreign (to Israel) gods. It can also mean husband, or master as well.

I join the shrug. Seems strange to me that people would ignore the fact that Hashem choose to use a term for Himself (so it must be okay to call Him that) and instead opt for a name which no one truly knows the pronounciation! Strange.......

Homework for tonight: How many times is adonai used in the Tanakh, and how many times is YHWH or Yah used? Find out which he prefers, and by how much.
