  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I prefer to deliver and serve them to myself, thanks. ;)

You'll have to make your own.

I'm going with that. Speech came before it but I'd say that was an evolutionary process, not an invention or discovery. The control of fire was useful but limited to begin with. But with agriculture you have the beginnining of society. People could stay in one place. Build more permanent shelters. Store food. And the more people you have, the more that individual abilities become beneficial to the whole. It's what kick starts literally everything.

Speech leads to writing. Fire leads to cooking and metalurgy. The domestication of animals. Nation states. If you were lucky enough that you lived where crops were easily grown (the Fertile Crescent) then you had a head start and he rest, as they say...

With thanks to Jared Diamond.
I agree that agriculture is a huge turning point in human history and leads to all the awesome things in civilization that you list.

But is it an overall benefit? For me, it raises the question of whether the life of the civilized human is better than that of the hunter-gatherer.

So given the OP, I put agriculture in the "mistake" category. But if it was a mistake, I can agree that it was the biggest one.

That's a good question.

Am I actually happier sitting here in a warm, well lit, safe and comfortable house having taken a decent curry out of the freezer, helped myself to a cold beer, learnt some licks on Youtube from Hotel California on my ol' guitar, sent a few messages to the family, watched news from around the world, made arrangements to have lunch with some friends tomorrow, listened to a podcast by Stephen Fry, read a couple of chapters of one of many online books I'm half way through, planned a video call with my bro in the UK for tomorrow all before I have a hot shower and hit a comfortable bed.

Or would I be happier as a hunter gatherer, cooking some of last weeks kill on a slowly dwindling fire in the rain before trying to get some sleep in a hastily built hut.

Hmm...

OK, that was somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but yes - I believe my life is better. If I preferred the outdoor hunter/gatherer life then there's plenty of room down here where I could do that. And I really enjoy camping and roughing it. But only as a temporary contrast to remind myself of what I have.

I hear what you're saying, and I wouldn't want to take the thread in the "which is better..." direction.

I just note that the top activities for adult males where I live are hunting, fishing, and battle simulations, e.g. football.

The hunter-gatherer life is basically that 24/7. But yes, make sure you've gathered lots of firewood and have a well-built shelter.
