The doctrine of the Rapture.

The doctrine that we will live forever as disembodied spirits in a place "up there" called "Heaven".

The doctrine that the Eucharist is only a symbol and/or memorial of Christ's body and blood.

The doctrine that Baptism is only an external, symbolic act made as a personal choice to demonstrate personal faith.

The doctrine that the United States is an especially chosen and special nation anointed by God.

The doctrine that the Bible is a Magic 8 Ball that one needs to shake enough to divine its inner secrets.

The doctrine that anything old and traditional is evil and "spiritually dead", and that God only works through the spiritually ecstatic feelings I have which change day-by-day.

I could probably go on if I tried, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind.

How many of these do you consider to be heresies? The OP asked for heresies you once believed.

Well Baptism isnt necessary for salvation, so its not a heresy to believe its just a symbol of faith

Oooh, may I borrow this list?

The OP is a bit confusing because the title simply says "doctrine".

Just sayin'...

Lessee, I used to be a credo-baptist, that went over the side
The communion as a once-a-year juice and cracker ritual has been replaced by the Real Presence in the Eucharist.
Speaking in tongues came and went, as did the "word faith" magic to which it was attached.
My brief infatuation with Lindseyite "End Times" stuff didn't survive serious Bible study.
There are probably others, but that'll do to go on with.

Mine would be that jesus is micheal the archangel and that hell doesnt exist.

Name one that you have thought was biblical but found out it was heretical?

You are a former JW? I am impressed, not many make it out of that cult.:thumbsup:

I used to believe in a lot of weird new age-isms, as well as some liberal theology all before I read the Bible for myself of course. I think that my previous belief that psychic abilities were simply gifts of the spirit is heretical for example.

I never believed that, but the question remained in me, so until I resolved it and proved it I was conflicted.

I dont think there is anything wrong with doing it and for an older person coming to the Lord can be a very happy experience but it isnt necessary.

Full fledged Heresy with a capital 'H'?

Definitely the idea that we will spend eternity as bodiless ghosts in the by-and-by.

But I regard the entire list I gave as blatantly unbiblical, unorthodox teaching.

The Scriptures teach, and the Church has likewise always confessed, that Baptism is for the remission of sins.

To say that Baptism is "just a symbol of faith" is an explicitly unbiblical statement and contrary to two thousand years of consistent, biblical, Christian teaching on the subject.

While I won't call sacramentarians "heretics", their rejection of the Sacraments which Christ explicitly instituted, Baptism and His Supper, as efficacious Means by which God acts according to the ways He has promised to act through them is a clear denial of biblical, orthodox, historic teaching.

A symbol-only Baptism is an unbiblical, unorthodox notion that denies the efficacy of Word and Sacrament.

Scripture alone
The Eucharist is just a symbol
Baptism is just a symbol
dispensationalism

Ditto. But it didn't last long.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

A few others too went by the wayside:
  • TULIP
  • KJV-Mainly ;)
  • Tongues-like-in-my-local-pentecostal-meeting
  • That all too common allergy to Mary
  • Fear of statues in church
  • The belief that the departed faithful know nothing about our earthly journey and cannot or do not pray for us
  • An occasional prophecy about the alleged ministry one will have
