If one has enough rules, then eventually everyone will have broken one of them. And one would teach them nothing more than to hide infractions better.

I think a lot of this debate/debacle ties into what I was mentioning before, which is that nobody is having a good-faith honest discussion about these various "story hours"

The far right say "they're groomers and perverts who want to molest kids"
The far left defend by saying "it's just reading stories to kids, what's the big deal??"

Neither is an honest assessment, it's neither a criminally immoral "trying to lure kids into a free-candy van" situation... but nor is it as innocuous as a "we just want want to read books to kids for the sake of doing something nice" situation.

Their own website tells what what they're about, there's no need for speculation.

First off, anyone who just wants to "read to kids" for the sake of promoting overall literacy and doing something nice doesn't have an "our mission" section of the website lol. Mission = Ulterior motive.

That mission is to create the next generation of "allies" who will vote for the policies they want in 10-15 years. You don't need Scooby Doo to solve that mystery.


Drag Story Hour is the left-wing counterpart to the right-wing's "Children's Bible Camp".

Promote a certain set of ideologies to kids when they're young and impressionable, and hopefully in 10 years, it'll "stick" and they'll be political allies... plain & simple.

Yep "drag queens are child molesters" is a strawman to defer from the obvious goal of acclimating children into LGBTQQIP2SA+. Another strawman is LGBTQQIP2SA+ means "gay" when it's obvious all those letters plus the "+" means a plethora of confusing orientations and gender identities.

In this case, it's not stretching anything... It's a case where people have been lying about the nature and purpose of drag story hour for 2 years now, and people believed the lies.

And when the opposing side is also lying (meaning that people are given a choice between which of the two lies they want to accept as the narrative), most people will almost always default to whichever lie fits in neater with their worldview.

the two lies being offered up for the last 2 years:
"They're sexual predators and grooming their prey"
Vs
"They just want to read to kids with no ulterior motives, what's the big deal???"

... And people have gravitated towards one or the other in a pretty predictable fashion based on their political leanings.

Ironically, the only ones who have been honest about what these story hours are actually about are the drag queen story organizations themselves.

From their own mission statement on their own website... "we seek to give kids unabashedly queer role models" "explore the gender fluidity of childhood" and "expose them to people who defy rigid gender standards and help them envision a world where everyone can do the same". "so they can become bright lights of change in their communities."

So by their own words, they have an agenda.


So when one side downplays it as "it's just reading books what's the big deal?", people know that faction is lying to them and running cover, which is going to make them more willing to believe the lies coming from their own faction.

In order to be proper equivalence,

A) the kilt would have to be exclusively associated with a form of entertainment that was (up until then) understood to be an adult form of entertainment.
B) the person in the Kilt would have to be trying to promulgate some sort of political message or political values system.

For instance, if there were some political beef going on over there and the kilt became a "staple" of a particular side of that dispute, and "Stories with Scotsman" involved books and exercises that tried to instill in young people, values that would make them inclined to support the Scottish Nationalist party in 10 years when they can vote. Then it'd be an equivalent.


This is why attempted subversion in the form of disingenuous "plausible deniability" hasn't helped matters.

When the Drag queen story hour organizations themselves say directly, in quite plain terms, on their own website, "these are our goals"
"we seek to give kids unabashedly queer role models" "explore the gender fluidity of childhood" and "expose them to people who defy rigid gender standards and help them envision a world where everyone can do the same". "so they can become bright lights of change in their communities."

...and then people on the political right say "we don't want kids being instilled with the idea that being unabashedly queer or defying gender norms is role-model material or something to aspire to", nor do we want 9 year olds to be encouraged to "explore gender fluidity", and then people on the political left immediately try to run cover by saying "no no, they don't actually want to do any of that, they just want to read books to kids"

Then the conversation has already started in a dishonest place.

As we've seen with several other hot button topics over the past decade. Dishonesty from one faction has a way of fostering conspiratorial ideas from the other faction. The way a lot of peoples' brains are wired are as such, where it's a "well, if they're lying about that, what else are they trying to hide" kind of shallow skepticism.

In what way is dressing as a women an adult form of entertainment? It certainly was not when it was done for laughs on shows like Johnny Carson or Jack Benny. The most I can see here is that drag can be entertainment which wearing a kilt generally is not.

If that was the conversation you might have a point. From what I have seen the conversation is people saying "we don't want those disgusting perverts reading to kids. They are trying to groom them and we don't want the kids to think they are in any way OK."
