• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In your opinion, who is more apt to find Waldo:

  1. Someone who believes Waldo is in the picture.
  2. Someone who believes Waldo isn't in the picture.

Neither. Someone who has not yet formed an opinion about the presence of waldo in the picture.

To answer more exactly as the question is asked, the person who believes waldo is in the picture is more likely to find what they think is waldo, regardless of whether waldo is in the picture or not.

Yes.

If there is something specific you are having trouble understanding about my reply, please let me know and I'll attempt to rephrase it for you.

Just ... please ... rephrase it.

Better yet, answer either "1" or "2".

I'll bite, it's probably 1, if looking for waldo is all the picture is for.

However, what if 2 is in fact carefully going over the picture for some other reason? then he might find Waldo on the carousel while 1 has happily assumed that he's probably in the line for ice cream.

Where this analogy breaks down is that anyone who can actually find Waldo can point him out to everyone without any need for subjective experiences.

(Incidentally, in Australia he's called Wally not Waldo. I have no idea why, just seems like a more Australian name I guess.)

It breaks down alright -- but I won't say where.

Atheists sometimes sound like people demanding that you prove to them that the box isn't empty, before they will open it.

They also sound like people who know that AVET is setting up his little "trap" and will simply declare victory and ask the moderators to close the thread, without discussing the point he brought up.

If I had to chose, I would say 1, because someone who doesn't believe (or at least accept the possibility) may lack the motivation to do a thorough search. That said, person 1 may also think he has found Waldo when he has not, because he has already decided Waldo is there. Also, if many in category 1 have looked in the past and not found Waldo, it may make little sense to continue looking. One more consideration is that if the picture has continued to be examined for other reasons, one would expect that Waldo would still be found if he was actually there.

What? AV wouldn't do that would he?

Exactly this.

Psychologically, if one is convinced something is there ahead of time, their mind will work to make sure they find it.

What does this have to do with physical and life sciences?
Should I have put it in C&E?

Neither.

You do know that CF has a Philosophy section, right? Or, does everything you want to talk about have to be crammed into this tiny little section of the site, even if it belongs elsewhere?
