Christianity & Evolution Are Compatible...A Reflection

There are about a 100 million Christians in the US and a number in other countries who would disagree with this.

I think the root problem is that Christian is not a specific belief system.

Some believe in predestination, others were predestined not to.

Some believe there is a consistent message through both Testaments and between the gospels and the epistles and this is Covenant Theology, others believe there was a clear change of policy from the law to grace and this is called 'Dispensationalism'. There doesn't seem to be a middle road between these two either and the battles between them are fierce.

The earliest schools of theology were mainly Universalist, but this is now a small denomination despite the clear Biblical basis for it.

The authority of scripture is seen differently by different people and denominations. Certain people decided which scriptures to put in the canon and which to omit and there were many opinions on these decisions. Recently there has been a reduction down to the 66 books used by the Protestants giving the appearance of unanimity but historically there were many opinions and only fear of banishment brought general agreement in 325.

The Bible can not determine what goes into the Bible so there is a logical problem in putting the Bible at the top of the pyramid.

But could the Protestant schism have been possible if Protestants had held the Bishop of Rome as the ultimate authority?

The amount Christians agree on is only determined by your definition of what you consider to be a Christian.

I don't see how the Bible and evolution can be reconciled:

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and

breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul...

And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and

every fowl of the air

These passages appear to say:

1. Life originated on land not in the oceans
2. Life originated from silicates not sulfur compounds
3. Humans and animals had separate origins, and it appears each of the

beasts and fowl also had it's own separate origin

1 and 2 are contrary to the fossil records and our understanding of the physical world and likely mechanisms for abiogenesis

and 3 is completely contrary to evolution
