Clear off a table in your house.

Place about 25-50 plates carefully on the table (overlapping them as needed).

Set the plates so that they are more or less uniformly spread out and stable.

Place a tablecloth over the plates.

Place a sheet of paper, cut into seven segments but all together as one sheet, on top of the tablecloth.

Lightly shake the table and observe the movement of the pieces of paper.

(Assume the table has an edge on it to keep the plates from falling off.)

Here's my challenge:

What have I just demonstrated?

What have you demonstrated? Nothing of any value, as far as I can see. I could not do the demonstration (this is not an "experiment") as stated, as I am not rich enough to have anywhere near that many plates, nor any reason to have them.

On second thought I think what you have demonstrated is a complete lack of knowledge about geology. Not unlike most people.

Never heard of plate tectonic denial before.
I suppose this instead might have to do with creationism, or perhaps the Great Deluge?

A flood of that scale could easily crush the Earth into plates, shifting them.
Wow, that's some flood.

Hello Buddy.

You have invented an experiment to back up a possible theory.

Whether or not the scientific world will accept the objective reality
of the experiment, remains to be seen.

I could not conduct the experiment as I only have three plates.

We need others to conduct this experiment.

Waiting with bated breath for the conclusion, who knows you
might even get your photo in Scientific America.

Though experiments are sometimes only designed to directly
support a theory, whether they actually justify the theory is
another matter all together.

Keep up the good work.
