  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

After 52 years, I have made the conscious decision to follow my local Aussie rules football team (Richmond, #goTiges). They had their second loss yesterday, and it was a drubbing. Why does it still hurt so much? How do people manage with these feelings of grief and loss? How do you cope if your team is dreadful and never wins?

As a side note, Richmond won the premiership last year, for the first time in 37 years. That's like a really long time between wins. Glad I wasn't following them then.

I'm a fan of the Atlanta Braves, on account of having been born in Atlanta and obligated since birth to root for them. Even though their glory days were before I was born. So I know exactly how you feel.

That's good, only a week of despair.
I feel ya, I'm a K.C. Chiefs fan (American Football), they are good at getting to the playoffs, after that, well.......they leave you crying in your cheerios.............again.
Last time they won a superbowl was before I was born, Superbowl IV.

Ever since I heard about this I stopped following so much. I still get drawn in occasionally.

Testosterone changes during vicarious experiences of winning and losing among fans at sporting events. - PubMed - NCBI

Participants provided saliva samples for testosterone assay before and after the contest. In both studies, mean testosterone level increased in the fans of winning teams and decreased in the fans of losing teams. These findings suggest that watching one's heroes win or lose has physiological consequences that extend beyond changes in mood and self-esteem.

I don't follow sport, although I'll play it. It just happens the hockey club (field hockey) I play for has a tiger symbol as well.

I don't know why, but despite the fact that Collingwood FC have quite a respectable record, the AFL jokes always seem to come down on them eg.

Q. Why did Cinderella run away from the ball?
A. Because she played for Collingwood.

Q. Two Collingwood Supporters are in a car without any music, who is driving?
A. The Policeman

Q. If you are driving and you see a Collingwood supporter on a bike, why should you try not to hit him?
A. It might be your bike.

We recently moved to a location right on the edge of the Collingwood/Richmond border, whilst still technically being in the Collingwood catchment. Which team to follow was an arbitrary decision, but Collingwood didn't make the finals of that list.

As an atheist, surely you recognize that these feelings are all smoke and mirrors? It's just the mindless electro-chemicals in your brain programmed over millenia to make you feel sad in order to promote the copying of your genes. But don't ask me why the chemicals care about surviving, just go have a beer.

Aw gee, I was just trying to make you feel better (or appear to yourself as if you feel like you feel better). Is there something in it you disagree with?

Was born in the show me state and still bleed red and gold, even though I now live in purple Vikings territory.
Go Mahomes!

I was born in Iowa, but I grew up in the George Brett era, so it started with that and spread to the Chiefs. I was at the 2014 WS. Awesome ... though 2015 was good as well.
