They are not necessary to survive, but they can and often do improve the quality of life dramatically. Would you consider that "necessary"?

I need mine to be able to see more than an inch in front of me, as I have retinopathy of prematurity (and, thus, very poor vision). I've been wearing glasses since age 1.5.

I suppose that it isn't necessary for some, but at the very least they're useful and allow people to see better and be more functional in their daily lives.

They used to be a necessary part of my life, but I had laser eye surgery done when I was 30, and have done without ever since.

Of course, they may someday become a necessary part once more; I'm not getting any younger...

I'm still voting for Bungle's "Myopia". Granted the YEC Ophthamologist has been coming up a lot lately, the myopia thing is also on a hot streak as well.
