Are spectacles a necessary part of life, or can we do without them?

I need mine to be able to see more than an inch in front of me, as I have retinopathy of prematurity (and, thus, very poor vision). I've been wearing glasses since age 1.5.
I suppose that it isn't necessary for some, but at the very least they're useful and allow people to see better and be more functional in their daily lives.
Just trying to work out how AV will make this about "science is myopic".
