My Make a Story 3

[Mankin]

Sakaki called for two of her employees. They grabbed the two drunkards by the armpits and dragged them out. Shinji brought his knees up to his face and curled up in a ball like a child. Sakaki, seeing this behavior, motioned for Kyuui to come over.

"There's something you need to know about Shinji," she whispered in Kyuui's ear. "He probably told you a story about a mercenary spirit being put into him. To be honest, I'm not sure if that's true. I talked to his brother and it turns out they're not even related by blood. When I inquired further into Shinji's past, the brother refused to say anything."

She turned to glance at Shinji to see if he was listening. He remained unresponsive. "I don't know if it's spilt personality or something more sinister, but..." Sakaki shook her head. "It's a sad state of affairs. The boy has a good heart save for a few fatal flaws of character," she said with humorous disdain.

Kyuui nodded. She understood Sakaki's doubts about his story. "I'm not entirely certain on the story either, but for now, I'm choosing to believe him. Part of my belief is because some guys took a wolf puppy (long story) before we set out. They threatened him with her because he had just been friendly with the pup. We got her back, but I decided to accompany him, figuring I'd be no safer there than with him."

Sakaki nodded. "I suppose those are good enough reasons for anyone. Just do a little favor for me. Make sure he stays out of trouble. Despite his prowness with a blade, he needs someone to take care of him as much as any ordinary person if not more so."

Shinji lifted his body off from the bed and got on his feet. He walked over casually to Kyuui and Sakaki and put his arms around both of them.

"Well why don't we shake off the shock by getting something to eat." Sakaki shook off Shinji's arm in irritation.

"You've always been terrible at flirtation Shinji, please knock it off. Now Kyuui, I assume you have your reasons for traveling with this man. If you need any help or need to find something in town, just let me know."

Kyuui nodded "Thanks a lot Sakaki. And I promise. I'll be so careful, he won't be able to put up with me!" At this, Kyuui winked.

Turning to Shinji, Kyuui said "Now, dear sir, I shall like to shop til I drop at your expense, if you please!" She wanted to lighten the mood and distract Shinji from thinking too much, probably ending up blaming himself, and give him enough reason to stay alert and out of the mind fog. "Oh, and I expect you to play bodyguard for me, being the gentleman you are." She batted her eyelashes girlishly at him playfully.

 

[Mankin]

Shinji laughed, "Well that certainly sounds nice. I shall accompany you, but only to make sure you don't spend all your money. We do have to eat after all."

He walked out the door, following closely behind Kyuui.

Kyuui observe the people and shopkeepers at the market while they walked around. Most everyone had either a fearful or hateful expression on their face when they saw Shinji. She couldn't blame them, after all, he had left the townspeople to clean up his mess all that time ago. How big must his burden be to endure all the scorn while trying to keep himself in control of the monster that was inside him. At an ice cream shop, Kyuui bought two ice cream cones and gave one to Shinji. "Here. Eat up."
They hadn't done much shopping, since Kyuui wasn't much of a big spender type. There were only two bags so far and they'd been at it for two hours by now. Taking a seat on a bench, Kyuui started licking at her cone. Patting the spot beside her, she indicated for him to sit.

Kyuui observe the people and shopkeepers at the market while they walked around. Most everyone had either a fearful or hateful expression on their face when they saw Shinji. Shinji took a seat beside Kyuui. He glanced around at a few of the people. A few of them gave him very dirty looks. He smirked and licked his cone.

"I can't really blame them. After all, I do have a habit of causing chaos although I do have good intentions." He leaned in close to her face, "Most of the time."

Kyuui raised an eyebrow. "Shinji, I have to tell you... Your breath has a bit of a stench to it right now. Do you mind not leaning so close?" If he thought her "easy" he'd be in for a surprise, because she wasn't so easily seduced. She looked away and focused on her ice cream cone. Kyuui closed her eyes and licked her ice cream looking for all the world like a cat washing its foot.

 

[Mankin]

Shinji leaned back. "That was cold Kyuui. It hurt." He thumped his chest in mock agony, "right here." He snickered to himself.

He continued to eat the ice cream. As he ate he thought, "I wonder if that man is even alive? He would be the only one who could remove these accursed tatoos. Ah well, at least I get to travel with Kyuui. That's an adventure in itself."

"Well, its better a travel companion tell you, rather than a girl you're trying to hit on..." Kyuui said, rolling her eyes.

Not that it would really matter what his breath smelled like, with his looks. That face in just the right expression could kill alone. Kyuui thought; very contradictory to what she acted like.

 

[Mankin]

Shinji leaned back in mock horror.

"Surely I would not be so indecent as to hit on any random lass. You must be mistaking me for some other scoundrel. Besides I doubt many of them would give me the time of day when I've got all these freaky bandages covering my face. Why it makes me look like...a...kiler...." Shinji's joke caught in his throat as he said those words. He felt the guilt wash over him anew. He shook his head and forced it to the back of his mind.

"Well all right then. What ya wanna do next?" he inquired.

Kyuui consumed the last of her ice cream cone, then stood up. "Well, we've been shopping, we've had a snack, how about we find somewhere private to do unmentionable things?" She said, smiling with a sly side glance and Shinji.

((And yes, I mean for Kyuui to be misunderstood. It'll be funnier that way. ))

"Oh really now?" Shinji slipped his arm over Kyuui's shoulder. "I'm game."

"Before we do, though, we've got to return to the hotel to put the shopping bags away, and there's a couple things we need to gather from our room. After we do that, though, we can go." Kyuui explained as she led the way back to the hotel. Shinji was still receiving looks that were filled with fear or anger. Kyuui herself was annoyed about the whole thing, though she could see why. It made her blood boil to think that Shinji had to put up with these looks that would make anyone feel like an outcast almost everywhere he went. Shinji was more of an angel of mercy than he gave himself credit for if he always put up with these sorts of stares. The only thing Kyuui felt she could do was glare back at those people who so misunderstood Shinji.

 

[Mankin]

Shinji felt the glares of the people upon him. He always felt their fear, their condemnation sweeping over him. Most of the time, he just pushed it out of his mind, but occassionaly, guilt would wash over him, for he felt deep down that he deserved all the hate that others gave him.

Yet, those feelings were starting to drift away ever since he met Kyuui. In all his life, he had never seen someone address him so frankly. It was like he was just an ordinary person, not someone cursed or evil. "She understands," Shinji thought to himself.
He turned his head towards Kyuui and said, "I..I.." he coughed, the words unable to leave his throat.

Kyuui looked at him and cocked her head. "Yes?" she asked, trying to draw out what he was trying to say. Unfortunately, they had almost reached the inn. If he wanted to say something, he'd have to hurry, or just wait til later.

 

[Mankin]

Shinji gulped. "What are you doing Shinji? You can't tell her this. It's foolish. You're just setting yourself up for a world of hurt. Don't tell her you love her." The last two words Shinji accidently spoke aloud in a garbled form. Shinji's eyes grew wide. Underneath his bandages, his face was as tense as someone who had taken Botox injections.

"Ah crap," he thought.

"...What... did you... say?" Kyuui asked. I must have heard him wrong... Surely he didn't just confess to me, did he? I must be imagining it. After all, It wasn't exactly clear, and we just met, what, a month ago? No way he could have said it. No way!

 

[Mankin]

Shinji gulped. What did I just get myself into? If I tell her this now, then she'll never want to be around me again! Don't be so stupid
Yet even though Shinji's mind raged against the idea, his heart was begging to be released.

"Kyuui, you're not going to leave me anytime soon, are you?" Shinji inquired, his words making a compromize between his mind and his heart.
