Do you treat your spouse like an animal?

Humans being animals, is just biological truth.

Acknowledging that humans are animals, doesn't imply anything concerning how humans are to be treated (or other animals, for that matter).

Just like acknowledging the fact of natural selection in the world of biology, doesn't mean that we should model our society to it and shoot all disabled or people with "sub-par genetics" in the head.

Just like acknowledging how gravity works, doesn't mean that you should jump from the Eiffel Tower.

Biology consists of a body of facts. Biology is not a social model on how to treat other organisms - whatever they are.

Is all this a YES, or a NO?

ETA: Nevermind.

I just saw your Marital Status.

You got me on that one! ;)

Neither. It is: "invalid question".

ETA: Nevermind.

I just saw your Marital Status.

You got me on that one! ;)

Next year, we'll celebrate our 20 year anniversary.
No, we aren't married. We've been living together for 14 years and have a kid.

My relationship is more stable then most couples I know of - most of wich are married.

I don't need an (expensive) piece of paper and an (expensive) ring for loyalty, love and trust.

We'll get married someday (read: go to city hall, say "yes" and sign a paper), for fiscal reasons.

I don't care how stable you think it is, or how many children you have; it doesn't qualify you to answer my challenge.
We'll get married someday ...
When you do, then you can answer my challenge.

Oeps, sorry. I assumed that by "spouse" you meant "the person you are in a relationship with and deeply care for and love".

My mistake. Apparantly it is about a signature on a piece of paper rather then about love and respect.

When you do, then you can answer my challenge.

My answer will remain the same.

You can't have both?

Did you keep your child from being just 'a signature on a piece of paper' too?

Have you ever been ticketed?

If so, that 'signature on a piece of paper' meant something, didn't it?

On the other hand, if you value your signature on a sales receipt for toilet paper more than a marriage certificate for the woman that is shacking up with you ... it's none of my business.

You just simply don't qualify to answer my challenge.

You can't have both?
Sure you can. But one doesn't necessarily imply the other. This is news to you?

Did you keep your child from being just 'a signature on a piece of paper' too?

I don't know what this means.
A child is not a social contract.

Have you ever been ticketed?
If so, that 'signature on a piece of paper' meant something, didn't it?
For matters of legality, sure.

On the other hand, if you value your signature on a sales receipt for toilet paper more than a marriage certificate for the woman that is shacking up with you ... it's none of my business.

"more"?
It's the exact same. It's just a matter of legality. Not a matter of the heart.

In a relationship, I value emotion and loyalty more then a piece of paper. Any piece of paper.

You just simply don't qualify to answer my challenge.

Yes, you made that clear already.

Nonetheless, my response to your "challenge" stands.

It's neither "yes" or "no". The answer is, that your question is invalid as it is loaded with nonsense.

What loads it with nonsense?

The word "spouse"?

What does "like an animal" mean?
If you don't mind, I'd like to keep this thread focused on those who have a spouse.

I'm not interested in people bragging about their concubines or bachelorhood.

Just those who have a spouse.

What loads it with nonsense?

The fact that it implies that because the biological fact is that humans are animals, that humans are to be treated as cattle or alike.

It implies that the facts of our biological nature, translate into how to organize a society.

It is, in essence, not different from the nonsense that states "if darwinian evolution is true, we should put a bullet in the heads of disabled people...".

Biology is just a set of facts wich explains things about the nature of life.
It is not, in any way, a model on how to organize a society or how to treat an organism (any organism).

I'm observing.
To do that properly, I'd like to know what your question means.
What does "like an animal" mean?

Why do you insist on this?
Didn't you deliberatly choose for the "spouse", just to imply a person that one has deep affection for? A person that one is supposed to love and respect?

Isn't that what it is about?

If not, I'm wondering why the "spouse" part is relevant in this ridiculous question.

Cattle!?

Would it have been clearer to you, if I would have asked:

Do you treat your spouse like an ape?

Isn't that what it is about?
This is a very interesting thread.

I'm beginning to think you guys seriously don't know what I'm asking.

Either that, or you're playing dumb to water my point ... er ... I mean ... my question down.

But I kinda don't think so.
