  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello @Graydon Booth, WELCOME TO CF  (and far more importantly, WELCOME TO THE FAMILY OF GOD too :tutu:) We're glad that you found us and joined in the discussions with us :oldthumbsup:

God bless you :)

--David
p.s. - have you found a local church to be in fellowship with yet? If not, I believe that there is perhaps no other time in our walk as believers when church fellowship and teaching is more important to us than it is when we are still young in the faith.

Also, here's an online teaching series that may interest you, called Spiritual Boot Camp. It takes a close look at four of our most important Christian spiritual disciplines, How to Study the Bible, How to Pray, How to Function in the Body (fellowship), and How to Witness. It will also give you practical help in applying the principals that you learn to your daily walk before Him, and before others, as well. Just scroll down a bit when you get there and you can listen to and/or read the messages whenever you'd like to (for free online).

BTW, I'm still using some of the things that I learned from this series 35 years ago in my Christian walk today.

1 Thessalonians 5
23 May the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body
be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

Hey there Graydon welcome to the forum! Glad to here you just converted. Would love to hear your testimony. Do you belong to a church yet?

Not yet, however I'm mostly settling on Lutheran. As to my testimony, my mom was a non-practicing christian (she's practicing now because of me), while my dad is a buddhist. Growing up, I felt like God made sense to me (as the world seemed more created than just a mere chance), but never took it seriously at the time, secular education certainly didn't help. After graduating high school, I started struggling with nihilism, depression, anxiety (I have OCD).
Anything I did to try and give myself meaning didn't work as I felt "it was pointless". I felt there was a need for an "objective purpose", although many online atheists tried to tell me that it was impossible and that a "subjective meaning" was the only thing that existed. Dabbling into materialism certainly worsened it.
It came to a head with a serious depressive episode, the worst I've ever had in my life. Couldn't muster much energy to do anything, incredibly persistent nihilism, and seriously fearing if I wanted to "off" myself (not going to describe as you know what I mean here). Although, thankfully this passed eventually and I've never since experienced anything like that.
Now, at this time, I developed an interest in politics, and came across a young Christian conservative named John Doyle, who showed me how a godless society bred this kind of nihilism I felt, and that Christianity really wasn't as illogical as I was taught it to be. So I decided to learn more.
Picked up C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, and became further convinced. Then bought an actual Bible (turned into several), started talking more with my mom about not only Christianity but possibly finding a church. And it was around April of this year, that I started my church search. First went to a Church of Nazarene, then an Episcopal, and just last Sunday, a local Lutheran church.

Otherwise, thats my position today, and sorry if it was kind of ramble.

TL;DR - Grew up agnostic, had a serious depressive episode due to constant nihilism, christian conservative began to show me Christianity, and did more research, got my mom involved, and am searching for a church.

Sounds like you've had quite the journey to get here. And C.S. Lewis is definitely one of my favorite writers, his books are a good place to start, aside of course from the actual Good Book lol. And yes, the logic of a Creator really is one of the best arguments for Christianity I can think of. It's so simple, yet so effective.

Best of luck finding a good church. Just be careful to read the mission statement of the church and test their doctrine against scripture itself. Some things can sound good, but don't always pass the litmus test. Other than that, happy hunting!

Nice! Thanks for sharing. The word of God is are needle through His Spirit in respect to truth. A lot of churches out there use your Bible through prayer and keep on searching. God is faithful!
