Darwin's use of the term "races" was basically synonymous with variations in species. In his writings he uses the term with respect of various species not just humans.

We have to be careful not to distort the context of the word as it was used at the time.

Not really the same. Collateral damage means extra damage outside of an intended action, and friendly fire refers to specific situations where a unit is fired upon by another unit from their their same armed forces or an allied armed forces unit.
They both have their specific meanings and refer to specific situations.

It wasn't changed, just shortened. I can go on Amazon right now and get the book and it will be listed under its full name of On the Origin of Species: By means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.
