  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My indoor-only cat (almost 4 yrs old) over the last week or two has gotten very feisty! She ripped the palm of my hand open with her claws when I got between her and the window where there was another cat right outside the window. She was trying to push through the screen, and when I moved close to her to close the window, she nipped at my heel, pawed at me and hissed at me. She's never done that before except twice when I tried adding a kitten to the household. Last night she did the same thing when she was curled up on my chair (but awake) and I leaned on the edge of the rocker.

I live in a "village" where pets are to be kept indoors but some don't abide by the rules, and there are 2 or 3 cats that roam around and annoy her to no end. If she sees another cat outside, she runs frantically from one window to the next, up on my table, counter, or wherever she can get to a window. I have not changed her food or treats. She never goes outside except on the screened-in porch where she can't get out, and I keep the screen door locked so no one can open the door and accidentally let her out or come in and bother her or give her something she shouldn't have. She is only on the porch when I am home.

When I tried to add a kitten to the household, she wouldn't have any parts of the kitten OR me until I removed the kitten. She hissed, growled, and pawed at the kitten if it came near her OR if I tried to come near her. I was toast as long as the kitten was in the house. It wasn't worth my loving cat and happy home, so I gave the kittens to a friend. It took a day or two, but she finally realized the kitten wasn't in the house any more and gradually came to me again.

I'm going away for a week in a month and I don't want her to be like this with her caregiver. Could it be a sign of something wrong with her??? I had her in for a checkup and shots in the Fall and everything was fine then. I've had her since she was about 6 weeks old and got her from a cat rescue shelter. When she's not being feisty, she is lovable and cuddley, but also very demanding. When she wants attention, she meows and puts her paws up on my leg until I turn around, and then she rolls over on her back for me to rub her belly. But she only lets me do a couple of strokes and then grabs at my hand with her teeth and paws--I think that part is just in play.

Sounds like an antisocial cat. She wants to go out to chase the other cats away from what she's been allowed to think is her own private world. Sometimes sterilization fixes the problem, sometimes makes it worse...and if she'd been indoors for four years without being sterilized I'm sure you would have noticed other problems before this one.

Is there a room from which she either can't see visiting cats, or can see that she's far above them? Can you designate this room as cat space, and keep her away from screened doors and windows?
