  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You walk into a room with a table and a box sitting on top of the table. The box is 1 cubic foot in size and shape, and has no bottom.

I lift the box straight up to show you there is nothing on the table, then I put the box back down.

When I lift the box up a second time, there sits an apple on the table.

Question: Assuming this was an actual act of ex nihilo creation, what would be different than if I would have used sleight-of-hand to produce the apple?

I'm looking for a specific scientific answer.

Note: This answer is extremely easy; don't try to make it harder than it actually is.

The reason for this challenge, is that I'm tired of people saying God used "magic" to create this world. I want to show a clear-cut, easy, scientific difference between creatio ex magic and creatio ex nihilo.

There is a difference between sleight of hand and magic, AV.

one is an illusion or a slight of hand, the other is supernatural that breaks the laws of the universe.
Then what's the difference between 'magic' and 'miracle'?

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." --- Arthur C. Clarke

A "miracle" on the other hand is something that happened a long time ago way over there, (Would I lie to you?), and you should put some money in the collection plate to get one for yourself.

Because a wizard did it
Apparently they are limited in what they can do:

Daniel 2:27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers, shew unto the king;

Question: Assuming this was an actual act of ex nihilo creation, what would be different than if I would have used sleight-of-hand to produce the apple?

The answer, seems to be in your question.
The difference would be that you used sleight-of-hand and that the apple already existed.

I'm looking for a specific scientific answer.

"Scientific" answer?
Well... in scientific terms, I guess that the sleight-of-hand way would violate any natural laws (like energy/matter can't be created or destroyed).

In other words...
The "sleight-of-hand" way, would be Penn & Teller style magic.
While the ex nihilo way, would be Harry Potter style magic.

Note: This answer is extremely easy; don't try to make it harder than it actually is.

Well.... answers can't get much easier then them being embedded IN the question, I guess.

The reason for this challenge, is that I'm tired of people saying God used "magic" to create this world. I want to show a clear-cut, easy, scientific difference between creatio ex magic and creatio ex nihilo.

Ok. Clearly that attempt failed.

Why do I keep falling for this necrononsense?
Hey ... you're a dogma hunter.

I'm sure you'll leave no [tomb]stone unturned in your relentless pursuit of what others believe.

I'll take that as a complement, I guess.
It was meant to be.

But it also tells me you're confused.

You're like a coin collector who'll only collect coins minted in the 21st century.

Looks like AV really likes apples.
Some time ago, under the old CF configuration, EnemyPartyII purchased a bushel of apples from the CF store and gifted them to me as a joke.

In reply, I purchased a KJ Bible and gifted it to her.

Did you make an apple pie, then challenge someone to eat it?
