  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think it's very telling that, whenever there has been a conflict between reality and the scriptures, reality wins out...

Every. Time.

Bible says the earth is flat, reality disagrees...
Bible says mental illness is caused by demons, reality disagrees...
Bible says staring at striped sticks will breed spotted goats, reality disagrees...
Bible says there was a global flood, reality disagrees...

Every. Time.
Reality says an object in motion will tend to stay in motion ... God stopped the earth's rotation.

Reality says things decompose ... God halted the decomposition process during the wilderness wanderings.

Reality says objects burn up ... God prevented a bush and Daniel's three friends from burning up.

Reality says a two-piece fish dinner can't feed 5000 people ... God had them take up twelve basketsful when they were done eating.

Tell me, what does it mean if an animal "chews the cud"? What does "chewing the cud" mean? Define the process for me.
I believe chewing the cud now means chewing an amount of food that has been brought up into the mouth from one of four different stomachs.

As I understand it, an animal with four stomachs is called a "ruminant."

Food, such as grass, cannot be digested in an "ordinary" stomach, hence cats and dogs reguritate it after eating it.

Ruminants, however, have four stomachs that can process these grasses.

No, those are all made up stories in the Bible. They are nice stories for children but even the Bible advocates putting those away when you become an adult.

Do the Bible have made up martyrs as well?

All religions have martyrs. They really don't mean a thing. All that they mean is that somebody was willing to die for their religious belief. If martyrs mean that Christianity is true, then martyrs mean that Islam is true, and martyrs mean that Buddhism is true. Do you see the problem?

Oh, my.

What a statement.

I don't belive Christianity is a religion, per se; but for the record, here's what God thinks of His martyrs ...

Hebrews 11:38a Of whom the world was not worthy:

It does not matter if you understand the definition of religion or not. It is a religion, and all religions, Christianity included, have martyrs. Why do you think that Christian martyrs are special?

And no, those are not the thoughts of God, those are the thoughts of the writers of the Bible. They are not necessarily the same thing.

James would disagree with you.

James 1:26-27
26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
KJV

You don't want to disagree with the biblical author, do you?

I did not see him even imply discarding the Bible. Just the obviously false parts of it. Even if the Jesus story is true it would only make sense that he would use terms and stories that the people of his time would understand. He would not be teaching them explaining the way that the universe works. It would take another lifetime to just bring up the disciples to speed. He had more important lessons to teach.

Apparently He taught that He was the creator of the universe and all life. That was a very important lesson, in my opinion.

Oh goody, you listened to Laura Schlesinger too? Yes a rabbit chews the cud. Deal with it. The law was written for a purpose, and that purpose was not to argue over it.

How do you know if information is accurate? (And don't ask me which world I'm talking about, that's irrelevant.)

So I'll weigh the same on the moon? Good to know.

Rabbits don't chew cud, no, I mean really, you can observe the fact that they don't. Also, there is another place in the bible which states camels don't have split hoofs, and all you need to do is look at camel hoofs to see this is incorrect.

Brain dead people don't really have near death experiences, or if they do they really can't exactly express that to people.

Brain dead people don't come back. Their brain is dead. The N in NDE stands for "Near".

Neither of you has a shred of credibility left. Sorry. You may cease to pretend you know everything now.

Given that reality and the Bible contradict each other in many places, I'd say they are.

In any case, you may take my question to be referring only to instances where the Bible and reality contradict.
Since I don't know of any such places, I don't know how to vote. (And it seems like there's a logical fallacy in your first sentence relative to the OP. I just can't put my finger on it...)

Assuming you just want me to clarify, reality is what you experiences when you go outside. The natural, as opposed to the supernatural.
So it seems you're defining "reality" as "that which comes to us through our senses". Right? So reality includes those people who hear voices telling them that they're Napoleon. Reality includes people who look at colors but only see shades of gray. Reality includes people with paresthesias, who can't sense that an oven is hot by touching it.

KTS said:
Which is the more accurate source of information? The Bible or reality?
Given what I just said above, are you implying that there are different sets of reality? That what's reality to one person is different from what's reality to another person? It seems to me that our senses can't always be trusted to tell us what's reality, unless you're positing that there is no reality, or that reality is subjective.

A few months ago, I read "Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife" by Dr. Eben Alexander. While he may be making the entire thing up, I'm convinced that he did visit heaven, while brain dead, and that his story is true. As usual, there are those who dismiss his story, but as a neurosurgeon he does carry a bit of legitimacy in my opinion.

If you're interested in that sort of thing, I recommend it.
