  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The problem with that is that some Christians are prone to histrionics such as foot stomping, strutting, clapping, and fervently interjecting Amens! I was at a meeting some months ago where one fellow was really putting on a show via shuffling to the music while praying and when testimonies were given one sister went out of her way to point out that she didn't like him.

Matthew 6:5
New International Version
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

I guess he received his reward in full?

Actually, if the music isn't too robust but meditative that possibility is reduced.

Is it allowed to have background music while you're praying? Like byzantine chant or something ? Or should you pray in silence ?

Actually, the church I attend uses worship and praise as the precursor to prayer: Psalm 100:1-4.

As for chant, this is a different sort of music, but I believe it has its place as well. I will go through phases of listening to Gregorian during prayer, and especially during times of fasting. Chant is more contemplative of a different state of mind - a crucified state - so it can accompany certain types of contemplative prayer better than what we normally refer to in the West as praise and worship. So it all depends on your state of mind, and your objectives, and the types of prayer you are engaging in.

I pray through music, it is a sacred pathway for me to the Father, it is part of his creation.
The Father sings...
Zephaniah 3:17
He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
