CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

In that case it is worth going over the history of this 'monument'.
Shortly after the court decisions that completely eradicated restrictive covenants based of race, religion and similar criteria (restrictive covenants meant that property could not be sold to members of the restricted class. That is now illegal, other covenants are legal, land must be preserved as open space and the like) a cross was erected on top of Mt Soledad as a signal to tell Jews they were not welcome in the area.
Quite understandable this cross is not viewed in a positive light by Jews in the area, especially those whose families have been there a while and bore the brunt of this bigotry. Some filed suit to have the cross removed from government land. AFTER that suit was files the monument was reclassified as a memorial to veterans.
Oh and the cross has been replaced several times, not renovated, changed out.
So it really is not a longstanding historical feature and what history there is is negative.
EDIT: Mainly for Sistrin: I actually favor government preserving parts of history including those that are specifically religious. Somewhere in the mountains above Los Angeles there used to be a small open chapel that sounded quite nice. It was a great disappointment to find out it had fallen into such disrepair that it pretty much no longer existed. That was enough to change just which hikes seemed worth doing.
I'm strongly in favor of government support for preserving the old missions in California, they are an integral part of out history.

This Judge, who I wonder about as to impartiality, should be censured because he's violating the USSC decision that came down on an issue like this long before.

This assault should forewarn every Christian in America. These anti-Christian zealots, if they are allowed to achieve success in this assault, will come for every cross erected in every veterans property/memorial, in America. And that is against the first amendment.
The Constitution protects the people from the government. The Anti-American zealots need to realize that!And stop invoking it as a battle cry going before them as they attempt to invoke it to strip American's of the rights it guarantees.
