In 1830, the year most carefully studied by Carter G. Woodson, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States. Most people don't realize there were free slaves not that a small portion of free blacks owned black slaves. Which is sad to me.

So a slave had about a .06% chance of being owned by one of their own. Why does it make you sad most people don't realize this? Do you believe this somehow makes the institution of slavery in the south less harmful?

One other fact, should a free African American leave his or her plantation and be kidnapped by slave poachers, he or she would have no recourse as it was illegal for African Americans to testify in court so he or she would not be allowed to plea their case to a judge.

Well it makes me sad because many blacks I have met were taught only whites had black slaves. In some cases they believed that before the slaves came here, whites sold them. They don't seem to know the real history of slavery.

The real history of slavery is that it has existed since the beginning in every part of the world,recent students of "history" would think it started in America in the 1600s

I think one obvious step is to of course hear each other out and make an effort to understand each person's point of view. However, the problem with that is that things can get heated really quickly and just deter from the intended goal.

Equality is what everyone is obviously crying from their soul, from whites concerning proper news coverage when it comes to black on white crimes..or just crimes period... To blacks with simple justice concerning white on black crimes ( these are just *some* of the things I heard) ...

However to do this it would require an unbiased mind...still a start would be nice.

Everyone is free to have an opinion..just let it add something to the goal of the thread.

A few weeks ago an article came out, and according to whatever values and polling they used, Canada was the most accepting country in the world for immigrants. I can tell you that in my home town of Vancouver, B.C., interracial couples are the norm, not the exception. I can tell you seeing a racially homogeneous group of kids is rare. We are getting to the point where skin colour matters no more than eye colour.

So, I can tell you what In My Opinion has worked.

1. Multi-culturalism - Everyone keeps their own culture, and celebrates it. The thing is, by the 2nd generation, people are pretty well "Canadian", and by 3rd generation, they are completely "Canadian". I think multiculturalism doesn't force people to join us, but let's them come at their own pace. Sure, some probably never come, and that's OK too, because the vast majority do. And their children always join us.

2. Friendliness - I've been to the States lots of times. And seeing caucasians glaring at Latinos, or treating them rudely, is common. In Canada, I never see that happen, it just isn't acceptable. AFAIK, Trump could never happen here because there just aren't enough racists.

We tend to greet everyone with a smile, instead of a scowl, that goes a long ways towards making someone feel comfortable and happy in their new home.

3. More Socialist Society- Strangely enough American racists are crying the blues because the society they have voted for the last 1/2 century has finally come to pass, and as everyone on the outside suspected would happen, they are the biggest losers from that transition. Instead of accepting responsibility for their decisions, they want the nanny state to protect their jobs and their salaries, so they complain that there aren't any jobs. There are jobs everywhere, there are tens of millions of illegals doing them right now. My message to this group of people is: You made your bed, now lie in it, and quit blaming other people. Move to California and start picking vegetables. Just work harder than the illegals and the farmers will be glad to hire you. There is no more work for unskilled labour that can't be done better and cheaper by robots, unless you are willing to work for a couple of dollars an hour.

Luckily, Canadians didn't get tricked as badly, and we kept a lot of our social programs such as Universal Healthcare, a decent welfare program, job training, etc., which help the poor, and uneducated, so their lot isn't nearly as bad as in the States. This has helped everyone transition, as far fewer people feel left out.

So, those are some of the things I've seen that have helped Canada make the transition.

That's not true. Slaves were being used by European powers in their colonies long before the United States existed. By the time the first colonies in what would become the United States were founded, Europe had already established many other colonies that imported slaves.

Yep, mankind has had a terrible habit of enslaving his fellow man if he can get away with it. As we have learned more, we have realized that slavery is counterproductive. As is racism, and that too will soon be gone, as the young eschew racism and Trump's campaign:
