  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Most of the world's population experienced record-breaking heat in recent days

"Glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, and sea ice are melting at an accelerated rate. Today they lose roughly 31% more snow and ice every year than they did 15 years earlier according to a long record of satellite measurements of all mountain glaciers in the world.

"Glaciologists and climatologists all over the world blame human-caused global warming. Among the highest melt rates on the planet, there are glaciers in Alaska. The Columbia glacier retreats about 35 m (115 feet) every year and all Alaskan glaciers melt 100 times faster than previously thought."

Dr Patrick Moore showed how the melting of the Artic Ice Cap photos were fraudulent.

One pic in the magazines supposedly show the previous ice cap and the pic to it's side
show the current ice cap which was obviously smaller. The problem is, the first pic was
taken during winter, when the ice cap is at it's largest. The other one, was taken in the
summer, when the sun is at it's highest and of course the ice cap melts making it smaller.

Is there less ice at the Artic? According to Dr Moore, yes, but not to the degree shown.

Also, even the National Geographic is guilty of fraud. They admitted that the
pic they had in an issue of their magazine showing a starving polar bear, was actually
and old bear at the end of his natural life. He couldn't hunt because his teeth were worn
and he was too weak to hunt. Fact is, 1973 there were only 6000 polar bears.
This was the result of over hunting by wealthy people who flew and hunted polar
bears from an airplane. The law prohibited polar bear hunting and now there are over
30,000 polar bears in the north. This is actually above a manageable level as Inuits in
Quebec are complaining that the polar bears are invading their homes and creating
danger for the people living there. FYI, they're allowed to shoot them, but the government
created fear of polar bear decline has created a public sense of panic over the situation.

But the thing is
"Global mean sea level rose rapidly following the last ice age approximately 20,000 years ago. However, the rate of sea level rise slowed and has been nearly stable over the last few thousand years. Since around 1900, global average sea level has risen by about 7-8 inches (Hayhoe et al. 2018, NCA4) and the rate of sea level rise has been accelerating in recent decades as ocean temperatures warm. Nearly half of this rise in sea levels has occurred since 1993, and the rate of global mean level rise since 1993 has been approximately 3.4 mm per year. It is virtually certain that global mean sea levels will continue to rise throughout the 21st century and beyond."

I know there's a lot of people who do not believe that we are facing global warming. I happen to believe that global warming is real and is caused, in large part, by mankind. Here in Indiana, we have been roasting this week. We've also been having Air Quality Alerts. The air quality has been messing with my asthma, unfortunately. I wish I could walk to Mass more often, but I can't because of the heat. Sometimes it's even too hot to go to the morning Mass. Thankfully, the heat is supposed to let up this weekend, so I'll be able to walk to Sunday Mass with no major issues.

Here in Florida, a few Sundays ago when we went to church, the temperature was 99 degrees, and the heat index was about 120F. One of the air conditioners at church was also out, so the sanctuary was about 80 degrees. And it's been 99 degrees several days since then. We are lucky if it drops down to 92, and at night the temperature rarely drops below 78.

It hasn't been that hot in any time that I can remember. The hottest it was in the past was 98F, since I started living here in Orlando about 28 years ago, and that was considered unusual. Usually Orlando is 92-95 in the summer in July and August, but has a wet-bulb temperature more like 108-112F.

In Nebraska, it's over 101 degrees and it stays hot all throughout the evening. Thankfully it's been cool in the morning. I'm thankful I don't live in a hotter climate and am relatively safe.
