  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm afraid I don't know much about their theology except that it is very different from the regular Trinitarian view. I lived in Utah for a year as a small child, and I will say that the social pressure that is brought to bear on non-LDS (even kids) is staggering. (At least it was in 1973, LOL!)

"Do you want to go to Primary with us? (Mormon Sunday-school for kids) If you went with us, then we could be your friends and play with you..."

I've studied some of the Mormon faith. I had neighbors that were RLDS - one of the splits from the Mormon church - and I wanted to know more about this book they gave me. Of course, this book was the Book of Mormon. This was actually my start back to the Catholic Faith - as I began questioning "Is this guy (Joseph Smith) for real?!?"

After studying and reading alot of the Mormon claims, the more outlandish the claims got and I was absolutely convinced that this stuff was just plain nuts! So, as a recourse, I began to look into the faith of my Baptism - Catholicism - and returned to Christ's Church.

I'm not saying that I will be able to definitively answer all you questions, but I may be able to help with some and at least point you in the right direction.

Were you on the Catholic-Mormon board that Martin Ford hosted?

Very little. What I know is what I have been told by missionaries. I know they believe that Jesus is the son of God, but is not God. They believe Joseph Smith is the prophet which God used to restore Christianity to fulness, after the faith had completely apostasized until he did.

I read somewhere that they believe that Jesus and Satan are spiritual brothers, but that is not something that a Mormon told me, so I don't know if it's true or if it isn't.

Incidentally, two main points that I have been told by others who've debated with Mormons is to focus on the Great Apostacy.

It cannot be proven that the faith competely apostasized, not even from Scripture. Scripture speaks of a great falling away but not a total falling away.

Also, if they claim they are the true restoration of the Christian faith they have to prove that they are. IOW, why should we believe it's them and not Classical Protestantism, Jehovah's Witnesses, or SDA's for example? That's what someone on another board told me.

When they came to visit me a few summers ago, I kept going back to the great apostasy, talking about Catholic apostolic line of succession and the like, and they finally never did call again. But that also could have been because I delcined their offer to be baptized in their Church.

from what I understand they think that people are born in heaven before earth and then born of people here. and the Satan and Jesus where both born of of the father in heaven.

Unfortunately, yes--more information than I EVER wanted to know. (Daughter unfortunately..., had several sets of missionaries "visit" me, was on the Mormon-Catholic Board and also on the old Mormon board of MOFF/e3mil as well as still another board, was in an extended discussion with a Mormon Relief Society President, and also did extensive research. But I don't want to be uncharitable or to debate--and that's probably how it would come across VERY quickly). If you want to discuss some issues, perhaps it would be best to PM me.

I've tried so hard to accept Mormons, but the Mormons I know just keep shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to being considered as part of mainline Christianity. A sixteen-year-old girl I know here who is Mormon had to, as apparently all youths who attend this Mormon Church do, go see a "seer" who told her about her life. Ashley was a little timid about going because she knew a woman who was told by the "seer" that "she wouldn't have children on earth, but she would in heaven."

I know a lot of gossip goes around about Mormons, but this I can honestly say came from a very devout Mormon who is one of the most virtuous people I know, so I don't doubt it's true.

I've been wrriting a book on Mormonism for about 10 years now. It is pretty much done and I have two publishers that sound like they might want it. Grant it, they've both said I wouldn't get paid hardly anything, but that's okay as long as I can get it out there. Since I've became Catholic I have been editing it, so it fits in to Catholic theology.

My question is, do you believe that Joseph really saw a spirit named Moroni and really got Gold Plates?

I think he did, that he really did see an angel (or what he thought was an angel) and he really got the Golden Plates that would become the Book of Mormon.

What do you think?

No, I agree that it was not divinely written, but I think he got the golden plates from a spirit, to fool him and to thus fool millions. The verse in Galations seems to have been written just for the LDS Church.

Galatians 1:6-96 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
It is said that demons can appear as angels of light...
