Morality in politicians

In 1998, the Southern Baptist Convention introduced a resolution on the character of public officials. And one of the clauses in that resolution said that tolerance of serious wrong by public officials sears the conscience of a culture, it spawns immorality and surely will result in God’s judgement.

This was done following revelations of Bill Clinton's private life but why doesn't it also apply to Trump for so many US evangelicals? Double standards?

The SBC needs to be careful. Church hypocrisy drives more people away from God than almost anything I can think of.

Aren't you forgetting that Trump was impeached for acts committed while in office? A skeleton is something that remains after the physical body dies. Trump is still alive and his behavior is the same as it's always been.

I just don't agree with you. In 2016 all I wanted from Trump was to kill TPP and nominate conservative justices. I think he's done far more than that for the country, especially in terms of jobs and war (getting out of them), than any president I can remember in recent history. Working in an IT department, I watched hundreds of my co-workers train their replacements & lose their jobs under Obama. I just don't trust that the left really cares for Americans. As Bernie Sanders recently commented, they've become a party of rich coastal elites who have forgotten the working class.

Yes - I stand corrected on that. It was for his dealings with Ukraine during his presidency. An impeachment on abuse of power, strictly along party lines except for Romneys vote if I recall.

I have been making this argument for years. Evangelicals ignored Trump's serious moral flaws and have been judged by God for it. All of the news coming out about Falwell Jr is a good example. This guy is a sleaze bag but was at the forefront of evangelical support for Trump. Selling our souls for Supreme Court justices who won't overturn Roe hasn't been worth it.

The problem is, you have lying going on both sides, so what do you do? A funny thing I remember on fb before I left - for years this atheist raged against Christians voting their Christianity, claiming he wanted no theocracy. But the second Trump was voted in, he raged about Christians not voting their Christianity. That's when I realized how most of these discussions really aren't honest - it's just about getting others to vote the way you want them to (not you personally). I say everyone should just cast their 1 vote the way they want to, it's their right. Then live with the consequences.

Lies that lead to so many unnecessary deaths and all the associated pain and mourning seem pretty serious to me.

Not being an American I'm puzzled as to how cases like Roe v Wade and all others actually come before the supreme court - via state legislatures with an active case?

They're lawsuits filed by individual plaintiffs, sometimes corporations. They're typically filed against a governmental entity but not always. They start at the trial court level, are appealed to the Court of Appeals and then granted cert. for hearing by the Supreme Court. A small number of Supreme Court cases are appeals from decisions made by state supreme courts.

The resolutions from the SBC are as binding on their membership as well as a net holds water.

And considering many of the Fathers of our faith like Moses, Jacob, Paul, and others...they didn't have clean records either.

Paul never slowed down even though he started how many riots?
Moses was hiding in the desert for what reason?
Nobody wanted to deal with Jacob for what reason?

I'm not saying that the founders of our faith were bad guys... just that they made mistakes and repented.
