  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I would be more concerned about my spiritual condition than never-ending threats.

Yes, it doesn't matter how long you live, if you are not ready to die.

However, per quoted experts who dealt with Monkeypox in Africa they had not seen such previously.
It seems likely to me that the conditions that seem to have fostered this outbreak -- basically a network of gay men having many sexual contacts -- are less common in most of Africa.

Scientific American-What We Know about the Rise in Monkeypox Cases Worldwide

The cluster of cases in the U.K. is rare and unusual, says Susan Hopkins, UKHSA’s chief medical adviser. The agency is currently tracking the contacts of those infected. Although data from the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the early 1980s and mid 2010s suggest the effective reproduction numbers at those times were 0.3 and 0.6, respectively—meaning each infected person passed the virus to fewer than one person in those populations, on average—there is growing evidence it can spread persistently from person to person under certain conditions. For reasons that are still unclear, the number of infections and outbreaks is increasing significantly—which is why monkeypox is considered a potential global threat.

The number of cases in the U.K., along with evidence of ongoing transmission among people outside Africa, provide the latest indication that the virus is changing its behavior. A study by Rimoin and her colleagues showed the rate of cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo may have increased 20-fold between the 1980s and mid-2000s. And the virus has resurfaced in several West African countries years later: in Nigeria, for example, there have been more than 550 suspected cases since 2017, of which more than 240 were confirmed, including eight deaths.

... nearly all individuals infected with the West African version survive. Only a handful of people died during the largest known outbreak, which began in Nigeria in 2017, and at least four of them had a weakened immune system.

Yes, I would imagine so. Those who travel to international sex parties may pass it on to more people than the average, unfortunately. Which is why they felt compelled to release warnings due to more scheduled activities on the horizon.

You might give your opinion of the Scientific American article I just posted. It seems to be picking up steam in Africa as well, though they are not sure if it relates to other changes which could make it more easy to spread, or some change in the virus over time.

I can't add a lot to it. I've studied a couple of recurrent zoonotic African diseases (Ebola and Lassa fever) but not monkeypox. Two things do come to mind. One is that diseases that were thought (by non-Africans, anyway) to be rare sometimes turn out mostly to have been overlooked. This is the case with Lassa, which was thought to be an exotic new disease but which turned out to be common in some parts of West Africa. The other is something noted in the article, which is that changes to the environment -- increased contact with wildlife, increased human density -- are amplifying the appearance and transmission of zoonotic diseases. So yes, they really are becoming more common. (That may be the case with Ebola -- it's not entirely clear.)

The nagging worry with a lot of these viruses, of course, is that they'll mutate (evolve) to become better at human-to-human transmission, something we've seen repeatedly with SARS-CoV-2. So, while I'm not (yet) too worried about this outbreak, I do have an underlying level of concern for the overall situation. Which is why we all should be pressing our governments to spend more on public health and on improved health care systems around the world. Not just because it helps relieve ongoing suffering of vulnerable people caused by disease, but to protect ourselves, too.

Now if we never learned our lessons from HIV like not screening for it in blood transfusions and not properly sterilizing surgical and dental instruments, then it'll spread to populations that don't "deserve" it.. but, as of right now it's probably going to stick within groups of fornicators and drug users.

Unfortunately it has already spread to a young child, if reports are accurate.

British scientists warned monkeypox would fill the void left by smallpox three years ago | Daily Mail Online

According to the Sunday Telegraph, a young child is among the 20 patients currently being treated in the UK.

The newspaper reports that the child is currently being treated in intensive care in a London hospital.

Oh my goodness! I have family members in Bern! This is spreading like crazy!

Were your family members in "close, physical contact" with an infected person? If not...why worry?

Your response was a knee-jerk political comment about something that isn't a pandemic, caused by a virus that is highly unlikely ever to prompt lockdowns however widely it spreads.

Then why did biden say we should all be concerned about it?

Then why did biden say we should all be concerned about it?

It didn't sound like he had a lot of information at the time.

‘Everybody Should Be Concerned’ About Monkeypox, Biden Warns

“They haven’t told me the level of exposure yet, but it is something that everybody should be concerned about,” Mr. Biden said at Osan Air Base in South Korea, where he met with American troops before flying to Japan during his first official visit to Asia as president. “We’re working on it hard to figure out what we do and what vaccine may be available.”

His later response was more measured:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/23/biden-monkeypox-quarantine/

But in the United States, “I just don’t think it rises to the level of the kind of concern that existed with covid-19, and the smallpox vaccine works for it,” Biden said at a news conference Monday after meeting with Kishida Fumio, the Japanese prime minister, at Akasaka Palace.

I think basic common sense can go a long way towards keeping yourself safe from all sorts of viruses. Good hygiene- regularly wash your hands. Keep shared spaces clean. Avoid people who cough and sneeze without covering their face. Never cough or sneeze over another person, etc, etc. And trust in the Lord :)

And in the case of Monkey Pox, men shouldn't have sex with other men.
Other reasons exist for not doing so as well....

ugh.

and honestly.. it's ugh for 2 reasons
#1 Obviously the children don't deserve it
#2 I can only cringe and dread how the child got it, considering the prevalence of pedos in that population.
