Hi everyone! I just found this site and I'm loving it already...its like the uber site! Anyway I was clearing out my bookcase which indirectly led to cleaning out my closet and making my Gramma extremely pleased, as well as God. As I said I was cleaning out the bookshelf and ran across Secret Keeper The Delicate Power of Modesty. Gramma gave it to me a few years ago, and from the looks of it, it's never been read. Well now it has, very happy that I did. =]

If you are a teen girl, or have teen daughters I encourage you to buy this book. Even if you aren't a teen or have one gracing your house =] It's a great book.

Mmmm...advertisement. Tastes like victory. Except without all the positive feelings one normally associates with victory.
Yeah i got the same feeling just from reading the highlights before even clincking on it.

SPAMM 2 posts and already telling us how she ran across a book she wants to sell us.

Wow I'm sorry you guys think I was spamming I wasn't I just love the book and think it is something all women should read. Again sorry you though I was spamming. Besides why would I want to sell you the book?

I was just posting to share what I have learned, and it was a good lesson. I thought that was the point of this forum; to share and learn with others who shared your beliefs.

I don't care if you are spamming or not but you need to be corrected on one point. You shouldn't be THOWING OUT $$$ worth of clothing because you think it's going to please god. What you should do is be practical and if those things are immodest to you then switch them up. Wear a tee under it, or a sweater over it, or leggings below it, or even sell or swap them for things you can use. Tossing things in the garbage is akin to burning books and records you find offensive. It's downright stupid.

That's all I'm going to say about it.

Keek, you are new so maybe you did not know, but this is generally a debate subforum so do not take anything that is said personally. I am curious if you feel there is a moral or ethical issue concerning the book that would be a good discussion starter? Otherwise you'd probably be more comfortable talking about it on one of the all christian subforums.

Welcome to CF, btw. :3

Jade thank you for telling me. I was feeling very attacked. =[

I was raised in an Apostolic church, that was and still is VERY conservative (I always rebeled). They taught that our bodies are temples and should be treated as such. I never really cared and wore what I wanted and looked how I wanted. Now I'm not saying that I'm going to burn my clothes that's ridiculous. I'm also not saying that you should throw out your clothes; that's your own choice if you do ok, if you don't ok.

Lux et lex said that he/she didn't see any correlation between the clothes worn and the relationship with God I do. For one our bodies are temples and should be treated as such. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have recieved from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with you body."
Now everyone intreperts this differently but I believe it to mean, I not only need to serve and please God with my actions and thoughts but my body as well.

Pleasing God with my thoughts brings to mind another verse. 1 Corinthians 10:32 "Do not cause anyone to stumble..." I know that I am a very visual creature, and my much loved Psychology class has taught me that men are even more of a visual nature than I am. When you see a woman in a low cut top it doesn't leave much to the imagination.

Like flika said wear a tee or something under a top, I plan to do that. I'm not foolish enough to throw out every low cut top in my wardrobe, otherwise I would be wearing the same thing over and over. Mostly I got rid of tops that I can't wear a camisole under.

I'm still looking for a verse....

The thing about temples is that people regularly go inside of them, so I think the metaphor doesn't quite work. Unless it does, in which case it seems modesty is still the wrong way to go about things. I guess put on a pair of heels, hit the club scene, and start inviting people to temple, if you know what I mean.

I feel as if you might have omitted this from your argument. It says the "body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you," not for "people who regularly go inside."

I guess someone was smart enough to remove the ambiguity when they wrote it.

Do you understand the significance of this and why it was put into theology? What is the indwelling of the HS a direct reference to in regards to a temple?

What, that makes no sense. Why does god have to go to church?

It's a reference to the Temple in Jerusalem. Judaism believed that God came down and resided in the Holy of Holies inside of the Temple. This was the veiled section that only the High Priest could enter, and even then only once a year for a specific purpose.

Definition of Temple(In the context of the passage):
Something regarded as having within it a divine presence.

Let me also present you the full context of the paragraph:

"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." -1 Corinthians 6:18-20

The Holy Spirit does not reside in us because God needs it, but because WE need it.

"And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us. Those who obey His commands live in Him, and He in them. And this is how we know that He lives in us: We know it by the Spirit He gave us." - 1 John 3:23-24

Your body does not belong to you. It belongs to God. Therefore, you don't put unclean things into it or defile it by sexual immorality. It's a temple that you keep clean and take care of because it is a sacred place.

People can't dwell in the temple the way the Spirit dwells in the temple.

But define body? Like physical body or your spiritual body. I've always taken it as the latter. And as for not leaving much to the imagination...I think there is plenty still left to the imagination when one wears a lowcut top. But I wear them appropriate places. When I'm going out somewhere where it is inappropriate I dress more modestly, but I don't see anything inherently wrong with wearing something a bit "sexy". But if you see it that way, that's your opinion. Just don't force others to buy into it.

Let's not act like that's not also silly.
