  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you guys consider modifying cars a potential sin or immoral? Just because it can distract you from god and cause you to spend excessive money?

I mod my car, although it doesn't eat up all my money. One friend I know though just dropped $10,000 into his Acura (and hes only 18). I think that's a little excessive. If you make over 75k a year, then I suppose it can be ok as long as you save money for yourself and give some money back to the community.

What do you think? Are there any other reasons why it could be a sin/immoral?

I think it really depends on how far you go. Your friend dumping 10K$ into his car is probably tring to soup it up and make it go faster. Most of the time that quickness leads one to break the law.

I'm the sort that does simple visual modifications to my vehicles. I had a car that I put fog lights into, painted a cross on, and tagged with letters (named the car "Righteous Fire"). A couple example photos:

I don't consider that sort of modding sinful, and while I will not say that I believe more expencive performance mods are inherently sinful, I will admit that I believe they can lead to sinful tendancies.

Does that responce help any?

Me and my dad love working on cars. So far we have put about $5000 into my '81 Z28, and over the past 10 years or so well over $15000 has been put into his '58 Fairlane. Even though my car looks great but can't run worth **** and his looks like **** but hauls butt (for lack of allowance to use a better term). I never really could get into the look of ricers, like the acura's or whatever, it's gotta be straight musclecars for me. Perhaps the closest I would come to a ricer is a Lotus Elise, dang those things are hot. Same goes for motorcycles, don't gimme a flashy jap bike, I'll take my chopper.

But since this really has nothing to do with your question, I don't think it's immoral but I think people like us need to get our priorities straight. Hell, a year from now I'll be joining the navy and probably won't even be able to see my car for a good 3 years or so, at least. It's just an addiction, to cool cars and racing. (note, I don't street race, but going down to the track to blow past all you silly ricers is always fun:))

If you are "trying to justify" it, then it probably isn't justifiable. My general rule is that if I have to work harder to prove something is worthwhile than I do to prove it isn't, then it probably isn't.

That would look pretty sweet tho man. If you make it happen, please share photos! ;)

Off topic, I know, I just wanted to say thank you. I've got too many obligations with family and such to be willing to go into the service but I aplaud anyone who does.

I guess that depends on your definition of "fun".

I find a great many things fun that are not sinful. I'm making a hat out of yarn right now and for some inexplicable reason find it incredibly enjoyable. I also find enjoyment in cruising my all-original 78 Caprice. The banana I'm eating right now is enjoyable even.

I'm sure I could go on and on, but we'd be here for days.

Are you serious? I guess it depends on what you're doing with that dipstick. :p Seriously I don't think it's a sin unless you're like, starving out your kids and wife, or family, just to spend a lot of money on a car. Do you get what I'm saying? Financial stuff is a sin if you're taking from others to get something of value, that's my best guess. I don't really know for sure, but based on what I have read. I read quite a bit, and in just about every religion, placing yourself and your desires above everything else is probably a sin, yeah?

So let's see some more pics of cars. I love a good ride. My ex boyfriend used to have an old brit car that he fixed up, and it was soooo hot. I loved it. He sold that thing for a big wad of cash too. There's lots of money in cars.

Well, there are a few pictures of my cars (past and present) on my website, the page located here: http://hickersonfamily.net/family/david/cars/

Nothing spectacular - I used to have more photos (still have them someplace I hope, maybe I'll redo the page and get those photos back up someday). I don't get into cars that I can't possibly own; I don't let the fantasy / coveting gain too much of a foothold on my life if I can avoid it.

I think that no matter what you believe, modding your cars, firearms, and other such devices is the most important thing man, boy, young man, and grizzled old fart can do with his time on this earth. If you disagree, you're a profound failure as a human being.

I also present to you an ontological argument for the a priori presumed eternal atemporal necessity of modification by reasoning known as modus ponens sans habeus corpus ergo propter hoc: for a thing to exist in the universe, it must be able to be affected by other things. If a thing can be affected by other things, it is by definition modifiable. Thus, if there is not modification, there is no thing that exists.

Be grateful that us men are working on our cars, guns, and jet skis, because without us, the universe would spontaneously implode and disappear.
