  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Yeah, lots of opinions out there, not too much skill though. Once someone goes beyond simply coming up with an idea but puts it into practice, then they may have something going. Most ideas never even make it to paper though, and until that happens it hardly even a real idea but just an opinion.

I see a lot of interesting stuff being developed in the independent dev communities, but it seems like most of the well known commercial developers got stuck on the hamster wheel; just spinning the same stuff to be on the safe side. Investors are fickled though, projects can take additional time to complete compared to other genres (excluding duke nukem forever), so they want results and some assurance that the game will gain revenues, so you now get a choice of what flavor of WoW you prefer. Ah, I think we would be in better shape if that game was never even put to paper, ah well.

So what world/concept? For me, the one I’m working on no doubt. For you, maybe WoW, don’t know. For them, what ever they choose, I’m sure.

I think the greatest MMO there was, was Star Wars Galaxies, just before the Jump to Lightspeed expansion (and even the expansion was OK). It had a fair amount of classes, was actually pretty balanced. There weren't 5,000 jedi running around. You actually had to work towards being a jedi. you had to know quite a bit about the game, and pretty much explore almost every part of the game. It was very fun for whole cities, and even playing individually. Unfortunately it all went to hell and is possibly the worst game ever at this point.

SOE under direction of Lucas Arts added new patches to the game, which drastically changed the gameplay, and caused a lot of people to leave the game. At this point, there are only probably 3-5 professions to choose from (when there used to be maybe 30 or more). Anybody can be a jedi. Combat and gameplay is completely different. I can go on and on. It's just so bad now.

Heh yeah, maybe not the best mmo ever but it has become the worst. I had a vet account, started after the first couple patches of what was the most buggy mmog launch ever, so I waited a few months to subscribe. I played up until about a month after the NGE (new game experience aka no good excuse) was released. Had a master bounty hunter/combat medic, three master traders and a Creature Handler that they removed after absolutely nerfing the class into the ground (worst nerfing I have ever seen in a mmog) and after it was deemed a dead skill class (most people did a respec out so they could keep playing the game) they removed the class entirely. Creature handler was a ton of fun, especially hunting for the very rare creatures to train. LA/SOE simply showed me how never to make a game or treat subscribers.

I'd love to see an Elder Scrolls MMO.

I'd also love to see an MMO where you gain rank and renown instead of levels and once you get high enough you could actually give quests and have other players working for you.

Think about this: A seamless world like GTA: San Andreas but bigger, the shellshocked environment, open endedness and atmosphere of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Shadow Of Chernobyl, story, characters, and voice acting that is the quality of Fahrenheit, and the streaming content of Guild Wars, where new quests, weapons, armor, enemies, and content is constantly being added.

It would be first person, and have guns, but also melee weapons and maybe supernatural powers.

I would like to see a futuristic platform MMO where you can learn skills and do all kinds of things. Being able to fly jets would be great as well. Actually, the thought of players being able to form corporations, gangs, nations and even empires (all designed and created by players) would be pretty radical in that kind of MMO.
