  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

missions with kids??

Hello! How do you get your kids involved in "doing missions" as a family?

We are mainly trying to find programs on a state or regional level that my oldest (1st grader) could plug into alongside mom and dad....

We try to involve her at the church level, but we're trying to locate something maybe for next spring break/summer that might show her that the world is bigger than our backyard.

I know we can always reach out to people wherever we are, but I am wondering if anyone knows of a group that brings in volunteers to hold backyard Bible clubs or something like that and let's kids be a part of the ministry....any ideas?

Thank you!!

One thing that I love doing with my children is finding an out-of-the-way nursing home and visiting with my kids. Unfortunately, in many of the smaller nursing homes, the elderly are just left there with rare visits from family. You can 'adopt' a grandparent or let your oldest practice reading to some of the folks there.

In a society that doesn't seem to place much value on the elderly, I'd have to say this is my 'best' recommendation.

My husband is missions president at our church, so missions is a topic that comes up often in our family. We have a 1st grader also...and a 4 year old. Right now, we spend a lot of time talking about all the things that missionaries do to help people. Also, our kids have met a few missionary families...the most recent family that came to our church had a daughter just her age. She has been writing the little girl (Kaylee) letters and learning that kids can be missionaries, too. We're also planning a mission trip in March... I'm HOPING we'll be able to take our kids with us.

Also, you could help her do things like sell cookies or collect change so that she can send a contribution to a good cause. The devastation in the wake of Katrina is a perfect opportunity to teach her the different ways that we can reach out to others in need. Help her collect things like toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, etc to send. Or help her organize her Sunday school class in a collection drive of some sort.

Check out all the relief organizations' websites and find out what they need the most. Teach her that missions is more than just travelling to foreign countries to help people. She can help people right in her own backyard.
