• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ok, my wife was on meds for being bi polar. For a few years she just got worse. After taking her to the hospital they changed the diagnosis! They said she had post tramatic stress dissorder and changed her meds. Seriquile has stoped what she called voices who kept her depressed and she is finaly geting better. I hear it is easy to be diagnosed as bi polar with this. So the question is...have you had any second opinion?

Any mental health diagnosis is based on symptoms related by the patient and doctor's knowledge. There is no blood test for a mental health illness. There are different constellations of symptoms for each individual and similiar symptoms from one illness to another. Then you factor in that we all respond to the same medication somewhat individually, it becomes more and more understandable that this type of situation can occur.

So on that note I am thankful that they have found a medicine to help your wife and a more accurate diagnosis.

I was diagnosed as depressed for 10 years before my diagnosis of bp. My doc and I are not sure if the manias had just not presented themselves, or if they were there and we just didn't recognize them. Either way the 10 years of extreme depression and losinf my job and my life were no fun, but I am thankful to have a med that works now and has given me back my stabilty.

Blessings!

I spoke to my doctor about this same issue. I'm thankful that I was accurately diagnosed early on and put on meds soon after. Bipolar is an easy misdiagnosis as it's symptoms are sometimes very broad reaching and diverse. Bipolar's depressive episode is very similar to PTSD and mania can sometimes go to the OCD end as it does with me in both cases so it takes time and observation to diagnose correctly.
My second opinion was PTSD or depression but it didn't sufficiently account for the majority of other symptoms.

I'm happy that your wife is doing well. Continue to support her. God Bless you both!

I'm very happy

My wife was mainly depressed. But she does have times of extream hyperness or obsession. The doctors said the stress was causeing phycotic episodes. Thats wht it was easily misdiagnosed I think.

It is so easy to be misdiagnosed. I was for a number of years. Once I found the right doctor who took time to really dig in and figure it out I got the right diagnosis and medication which has made a BIG difference. The trick is to just hang in there, keep trying and find the right doctor for yourself.
