Why do you think there are so many rampant misconceptions of the RCC?  why does it seem that ever bulletin board is full of people that say "when I was in CCD/RCIA/Catechism/catholic school, etc, the teacher said _______________(fill in with your favorite falsehood about the church's beliefs).

 

I understand why other denominations have these misconceptions.  At first i assumed it was just your average baptist/lutheran/whathaveyou lay person that didn't know any better, than to my horror, I found that even there clergy have the same misconceptions, and then, to my deeper horror, I found that the clergy got them taught to them at there seminaries!

Pick up a book by Ralph M. McInerny entitled What Went Wrong With Vatican II (Sophia Press, 1998; ISBN 0-918477-79-4). He explains how the liberal political element in American Catholicism got loose after the Council, and started pushing all sorts of odd agendas, claiming that it was all "in the spirit of Vatican II", which it was not. It will be crystal clear by the time you finish the book what the story is.

yeah, that was me, I'm not sure if I should be offended or thankful from your comment though, the whole protestant gig doesn't sit well with me.  I knew I had seen your handle somewhere.

I got in a tiff with 1st cor over there, and they banned me.

in fact, I forrayed back briefly as i can eat 50 eggs, but someone caught on, and banned me again!

 

since then I haven't been back, that place is nuts.

If you want to pinpoint the reason for the problems in the Church (which are getting better by the way) then you have to go back a way. After every Ecumenical Council there has been uncertainty and a "sorting out" period. Well, Vatican II was a very unique Council in that it was more about implementing Doctrine than proclaiming it, therefore the fall-out was even greater. If you combine that with the changes in the liturgy, the underlying feeling about "changing" certain Church teachings (such as contraception) and other things going on at the time, you have a ripe atmosphere for mass confusion in the Church. We are still feeling the effects of it today. Many theologians openly defied the Church after Vatican II and especially after Humanae Vitae. This opened up a whole new can of worms that then led to dissent by priests and lay. Then the dissenters got control of the Universities and Seminaries and started to train their own followers in the way they wanted them to think and in a way dissent became "inculturated" in the systems of training people in the Church. The crisis in the pews became even more noticable because Catechesis went out the window.

We are recovering from this, but it will take time to undo all the errors. It takes a strong commitment from strong leaders to properly lead in order to do good, which is why we need strong, committed pastors.

If you want to read a short and good book on the fall out from Vatican II, then I recommend the book "What Went Wrong With Vatican II" from Ralph McInerny.

Total compliment.  I thought you were great.  You really tried to get along with everyone.  One of my favorites was your thread on the "Revised Protestant Version."  Everyone started slamming you because they assumed you to be Catholic and you came out and said you were Baptist or something like that! And then they didn't know what to do!

Anyway, it's great to have you here.  How'd you find out about us?  And, did you convert to Catholicism or are you just inquiring?

I got this site recommeded to me as one of the best from another site I frequent (the religion and philosophy board on Texags.com)

Oh, I had forgotten that thread, that was fun while it lasted.

I was raised Catholic, went to college, started experimenting (some do drugs, I tried denominations!)

then, I met a girl (how many bad stories could start that way?)

Long story short, I didn't like the RCC in the college town I was at, went eslewhere, met a really cute girl at another church, convinced myself that it didn't matter, got married.

Started learning about the new denomination, what they believe, and comparing it to what I had learned growing up. Went to a baptist seminary for a few classes, got real distrurbed, and am now trying to get my very anti-catholic wife to go back to the catholic church with me. added pressure now since we are about to have a kid.

I thought I remembered you saying something about taking seminary classes. My wife wasn't Catholic but she converted. I just prayed a lot and talked to her a lot. I married out of the Church too but three years ago we had our marriage blessed by the Catholic Church. My prayers are with you.

I'll go back...just for you....to get that link. I don't go over there anymore. I never got banned or warned but, save for Arkyrich, I don't think there's any Catholics that stayed. I haven't been there in a long, long time. Wols and others may disagree with me, but I felt RR was far more hateful than the Left Behind Messageboard (the board that shall not be named around here!).

50 eggs - you will have my prayers for your family as you pursue conversion/reversion. Have you read "Rome Sweet Home"? Scott and Kimberly Hahn went through some difficult times over his conversion, but God brought her around. Maybe if she's open, you could have your wife read some conversion stories? I'm thinking particularly RSH and "Surprised By Truth".

I've been there to mostly read, and I havn't seen Arkyrich in a long while. There are 3/4 Catholics there now; Brian (maybe college age and knowledge), Neal (good posts), Debih (does a good job), Axion (from England). 

William Putnam and Curmudgeon were both recently banned, just as the threads on Hunt's The Woman Rides the Beast started. You had to have the book to participate. Bill said FirstCor was a bigot and Curm commented on empty headed posts.   Curm has a detailed refute of WRB on Steve Haws board, Examining Protestantism. At the request of Crum, I posted a link to his threads and invited RR posters to debate on Steve's board. Of course the link was deleted and the thread closed.
