Did you know that Microsoft can detect if you modify your X-Box 360, and will ban you once they do? That's kinda scrary isn't it?

Think about it: to play online, you have to input your credit card information, social security number and an adress. That means Microsoft knows where you live, knows your bank account number, and knows your social security number; not just yours, but MILLIONS of people. Isn't that scary?

Not just that either. If you watch netflix through your X-box (which they encourage you to do) or post on Facebook through your X-Box (again, something they encourage you to do), that means they can know what movies you watch, how often you watch movies, what you post on facebook, and possibly what your password on FB is, along with what you post. If they can detect a slight modification on an X-Box, I'm sure they watch what you post on FB, and everything else I mentioned.

And not just that!

Have any of you seen the new 360's that are coming out? Here:

Kinect: How the new Xbox 360 motion sensor could change our everyday lives - mirror.co.uk

This thing can detect motions made with every part of your body, from facial movements, to leg movements, to eye movements and vocal movements. That means that X-Box will also know what you look like, sound like, and how you move, in addition to everything else, especially if this information is being transfered through the internet for online play.

Is it me, or ISN'T THAT SCARY???

I think your getting a little to far into it, I don't think they'd even pay attention, none the less spy on you. They have dozens of millions of customers, with around 36 million customers around the world, you seem pretty insegnificant.

I think the Natal (I like better than kinect) is jsut a fun device. It would take data and money just to send all the information your putting out, multiply that by 36,000,000 and thats a heaping load of cash.

Google has many more ways to spy on you than MS. However, as far as MS, they should know when you mod your box if you're going to attempt to play on their network. People who chip their box are most likely pirates. Your information to play online... every company requires the information apart from your SSN, which is probably for security considering how many accounts get hacked these days. And sure, Kinetic could open a door to spying just like webcams do, but why bother? See someone moving and jumping like an idiot?

It's not that would, but that they COULD spy on me if they wanted. And not just on me, but on at least 36 million other people. That's too much power in the hands of one company.

Even from my console, I can see when you're on, and what game you're playing. Not just that, but I can see what exactly you're doing in the game (if you have Super Street Fighter 4, I can whether you're playing regularly, or are in training mode). Furthermore, I can see what other games you have. In fact, I can see what games people who don't even accept me have, by looking at their gamer card! True, you can probably shut this feature off...but if little ol' me can see all that, just imagine what Microsoft can see.

Scary.

It may sound dumb, but it's basically what the Wii does, just much better. And we know how popular Wii's are.

True. But MS still seems like a threat in the spying department.

I agree. I have no problem with them banning people from modding...it's just the thought that they have technology that CAN detect this is kinda scary.

I don't know about what Microsoft is doing with this technology as far as spying goes, but they definitely can spy on people. What I do know is that some companies, organizations, institutions and governments DO spy on the general public and they use Microsoft products to do it.

He's not getting to far into it. There are actually documented cases of this happening, although, as I said, it's not necessarily Microsoft (but does use Microsoft products).

One example of a school doing this against students via webcams at home in laptops it gives to the students:
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Security/FBI-Investigates-Webcam-Spy-Allegations-Against-School-451724/

If you have a computer using Windows Vista or 7 (not sure about XP and other OS) and a webcam, you ARE vulnerable to being spied on.

Technically, if you have a computer, be it Windows, Linux, OSX, etc. you can be spied upon, and I'm sure that privacy activist groups will bring this up before it's launched, so I'm not really all that concerned about it. Being that I'm one of those privacy activist people, and I'm not concerned about this, that says a lot.

If you're worried about your information getting out....ha. Well chances are it's already out there. Ever made an online transaction? E-Mail? Used a credit card??
That doesn't matter. The point is, one huge independent company has access to info of millions of people, and will also be able to know what those people look like. I'm not saying Microsoft will do anything evil, but having this info will give them a lot of potential to.

Go make yourself a tin foil hat, mate. You really need it.

The reality is that as much as you would love to believe MS is spying on you, why would they? They already have your credit card, they already have your information from your xbox live account... There are many more companies who are much more malicious with your information than MS. Do you let companies swipe your drivers license when you buy something at their store? Guess who is storing data there...

It's not that I believe MS is currently spying; it's just that the stage is perfectly set for them to do so. No one should have such capability, whether they intend to use it or not.

Then we would have to live without street cams, banks, electronic shopping (checks, Credit cards), security cameras, etc.

Wed have to go back a century if you didn't want anyone to have the ability to spy on you. If you want to be totally spy free, kill yourself, because we have dozens of satilites that can see you anywhere. Or maybe just stay indoors, use no electricity, water, or go outside at any time for any reason.

Face it, if the gov., google, ninjas have way more ability to spy on you than M$ does.

I don't own a video game system or intend to.
I am also going to switch to Linux very soon.
Ok... so you posted in a gaming forum to tell people you don't game and are switching to Linux... Why?

All that cool futuristic technology we long for in scifi movies will never come without someone having the ability to spy.

Look at the xbox thing as a webcam and you'll be fine. :)

I thought this was funny, Microsoft is the least of your worries buddy, take a look at our own government :). Oh and the motion cap system which the new xboxes are Compatable for (not included) are used for controling games, they have nothing to do with sending signals through the network so Microsoft can see when you are having breakfast ;D
