I think we ought to both recognize where he went wrong late in life as a bishop, and his great contributions earlier in life to the spread of Orthodox enlightenment. His historical work is of immense value, in my opinion.

May the Lord receive and forgive him, as we ourselves desire to be received and forgiven!

It was 2006 and I was sixteen and still Roman Catholic - my dad became Orthodox the year before and my stepmom did so in 1987 with the EOC. I remember asking Fr Philip in Miami "I grew up in a Catholic school and there was a 700 year gap between Constantine's ending the persecution and the Crusades. What happened?" Fr Philip gave me Ware's, "The Orthodox Church". About a week and a half later I was halfway through it when I was sold. I was chrismated the next month.

Indeed I love that book. And its counterpart The Orthodox Church is a very good book about the history of the Orthodox Church and its relations with other churches.

Yes I recommend it for anyone looking to learn more about the Orthodox Church. Many of my friends/family are unaware of the Eastern side of Christianity.
