  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So, Pluto is getting old, and I want to give AV some more ammunition. So I wanted to start a thread to gather definitions that changed over time with the development of science. I will start with these two:

Meter - officially adopted as an international measurement unit by the Metre Convention of 1875, the definition of this unit has changed many times, and every time it did, something that was 1 meter long before the definition "changed" length after the new definition.

Kilogram - First defined as “the absolute weight of a volume of water equal to the cube of the hundredth part of the meter, at the temperature of melting ice”, today is defined as the mass of several 90% platinum / 10% iridium standards. But the mass of these standards changes over time (graph below) and scientists are trying to come up with a new definition. When they do, these standards will not weigh 1kg anymore.

So, AV, drop Pluto! :)

I didn't know this science blunder.
I would love to see AV add this to his rotation.

So, wouldn't those changes make all the measurements (and science) done with those invalid?

Oh no! The standard of mass has errors that may be as large as 1 part in 10^7.

Clearly, all of science is now totally worthless. </sarcasm>

Internet Apostle gave you an example of wishful thinking by a creationist. They are always looking for a way to "invalidate" the data that supports evolution and related sciences.

Exactly how they do with Pluto, or thalidomide :) I would just like to see some change.

Here is one more "flaw" of science, cigarettes used to be "endorsed" by doctors:

Of course, they were never endorsed by doctors based on scientific evidence and the add campaign was run by big tobacco money. Actually, what scientific evidence showed is that tobacco damages its users. So there you have it, science fails again (or does it?).

I'm already familiar with "knot." :)

(And I'm genuinely sorry that Pluto is so tiresome to you guys. I truly am.)

Sadly, the reason you think we are tired of it is quite far from the real reason it is tiresome.
