• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I used to have a fast metabolism and eat lots of food.I had anorexia for a year and had a bmi of 14 when I sought help. Now,a year later,I have a bmi of 18.
A year ago,a nutrionist told me that when I would have a bmi of 18 I would need at least 2000 calories a day.But I eat 1800 calories a day now and I'm still gaining weight.I don't understand what's wrong.Did anorexia mess up my metabolism or could it be something else?

P.S.I'm 5'3 and walk 90 minutes a day.

Thank you for your help.

I do know that it puts you in starvation mode that changes your body to preserve every calorie, every minescule amount of energy it can. I'm not sure how long it takes to go back or if it can get "stuck". I know that I struggle with weight gain after my bouts with anorexia. Part of my anxiety is psychological because gaining weight is painful for me, and then there are the few times it's actually been a BMI issue, where I turn into a bad weight for my height. I'm sorry I can't give you more answers but I do want you to know someone's been there and it sucks and it's hard.

I've also had a problem with weight issues. My weight would not move for a month sometime. I'm pretty sure you can get caught up but you just need patience. It's hard I know. I am praying for you. Seeing a counselor could help. All the best to you.

Yeah... I struggled with and eating disorder for 10 years and it's way easier for me to gain weight now than it was before. It feels like I can eat normal amounts and food like everyone and gain as much weight as if I were eating junk food every day. But I've only been eating somewhat normal for about 2 years so I still believe that as I eat better and better that God will completely restore my metabolism. He can make it happen for you, too! :)
