I am very uninformed about the Messianic system - although I am facinated.

Being NOT Jewish, circumcision does not apply to me (im also female, another good reason...lol) I guess my question is....we as Christians (Gentiles) are baptised...many of us as a sign and seal of the New Covenant ....do Messianic Jews get baptised...or is it not observed as Jews are apart of the Mosaic covenant (ie:circumsision) - is baptism required of Jews also? - how do jews in general view this as opposed to Messianic Jews?

pardon me if this makes no sense at all......

GBU all!!!

Well baptism of course started with the Jews, not the Christians. Remember the story of John the Baptist?

It actually comes from a ritual immersion ceremony in Judaism called the mikveh. One takes this bath to finalize becoming clean after a period of uncleanliness. Baptism/immersion in the Mikveh is a symbol of conversion both in Orthodox Judaism (adopted Jewish children for instance are baptized), Messianic Judaism, and Christianity.

and yes, I was baptized too.  ;)

Yes, Talmid , did you get immersed in a river, or the ocean? Many do this before Passover, right?

My dream would be to have it re-done ( like a re commitment) in the Jordan river, but I might have to settle for the Little Jordan.

Oops, missed your question earlier Sonworshipper.

No, I didn't get rebaptized when I was in Israel. The Jordan river was pretty small at the time do to the drought too. Anyways, my first baptism stands once and for all by the choice of my soul so I feel that getting rebaptized would belittle it.

Hi Talmid, I think you misunderstood. My question was:

Did you get immersed in a river, or the ocean? Many do this before Passover, right?

Then I said that :My dream would be to have it re-done ( like a re commitment) in the Jordan river, but I might have to settle for the Little Jordan.

That is because I was kinda forced into baptism when 12 years old ( the proper age for my denomination at the time) . But I did not receive the Ruach HaKodesh at that time, that didn't happen until many years later. So for me of full understanding now, I would like to make a true obedience commitment with the full understanding now. :)

i wasnt baptised. i was going to do it, but the parents freaked out enough about coming to faith. after litterally throwing a fit and breaking down in tears... she asked if i was baptised. i hadnt... she seemed relieved.

she asked that i wait 3 years in faith before being baptised. her thinking was that y'shua was like any of my other friends, and i would get bored very quickly and move on to other friends. it has been nearly 3 years (just over 2 years since i told her).

although i wasnt officially baptised, a when i told my christian friends that i came to faith we went to the beach, prayed and they threw me in. it was a symbolic thing...

3 years is almost up now. want to, but not sure about it... dont want to be baptised in a church or congregation that i dont feel is walking on the correct path. not sure what is going to happen.

Wow Amy, what exactly does your mom think will happen if you are baptised ? I mean does she think it's denoucing your Jewishness or something ?

I would like to remind you that when John the Baptist was baptizing those people didn't have any certain "path" either. People that wanted to be baptized basically just went to the river and he Baptized them in the name of Yeshua. That may be something for you to think about.. I hope you get what I am trying to say..

Bless you and I hope you find your way in this..

Acts 19:1-4

19:1 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"

They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."

3 So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?"

"John's baptism," they replied.

4 Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." 5 On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

Those baptized by John did so under his calling them to Make straight the way of the Lord, this is the path they wanted to follow. They were to cleanse themselves in preparation of His coming.

Acts 8: 26-38KJV

26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Amy, what makes you think what you did at the ocean wasn't sufficient? It is a living water, you had witnesses, you were immersed. I consider that baptized. It is nice to do it before family and friends in a ceremony type situation, but I don't believe that HaShem thinks that necessary. As you can see in the above scriptures, the eunuch had a very improptu baptizm.:)

good point, heh :)

I always kinda thought it was a way of making your decision public, but now I realize it really isn't that at all, it's a symbolic act.

Dunno if you feel you were deliberate about the getting-thrown-in part, but yeah, I'd consider that good enough to be called a baptism, definitely. Your call. ;)

missy- i think maybe she thought that it would make me un-jewish. i grew up hearing that jews who believed in jesus werent really jews.... and i guess i have had some of the internal hatred thing going on since i came to faith. hearing that all of a sudden you cannot be something that you identified yourself as hits you hard. it is like growing up a female and being told when you are 18 that you really arent female and are in fact male.... ok that was a stretch......

she didnt want me to rush into something that i didnt know much about. and she thought that i had made my decision without the facts... haphazardly i guess. it was her way of saying that she would approve if i continues to explore without making any kind of official declaration of faith within the church, it was specifically baptism that she had a problem with.

as for the beach thing... i never said that i didnt consider it a baptism. it wasnt a baptism in the way that mainstream society sees it. it wasnt a thing at a church... there was no one like a pastor or rabbi there. it was spontaneous. it works for me... i dont consider myself baptised in that sense, but i do realize that technically that was what i did. the reason that i stated it the way that i did was because many christians that i meet dont consider this a baptism and say that i have to be baptised in a church in order for it to "count" what ever this "having it count" thing is.

It's a miracle.. but um this is basically what I was trying to say. I too felt you were actually baptized with your friends that day at the beach..   I just didn't want to offend anyone because I didn't want people to think I was making "light" of baptism. And of course yet another "issue" to ensue here on CF.

But in any event, whatever you decide like I said, I hope you are blessed with it, Amy.
