• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

While indulging in one of my other, less damaging habits which is my obsession with music, I came across this blog about George Harrison. As the blog states Harrison was not an alcoholic, and whether he was a Christian or not is debatable. However this blog mentions meditation as a good way of dealing with alcohol issues. Meditation is used in a lot of religions including Christianity. My church are quite big on it but I've never really thought about it as a way to tackle alcohol issues before.

I am currently not very good at meditation but am trying to get better as a way of dealing with my stress and anxiety issues. I believe that if I could deal with them my issues with alcohol would be a lot easier to deal with.

Please go to the AA website and see that even AA mentions meditation. It's not a cure for alcoholism. It's a coping tool. Alcoholics Anonymous :

Step 11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God.

Even if you cannot go to AA meetings, you can learn about AA, get the AA books, read them a learn how to work the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Many people do.

There are also AA groups available online.

I don't believe there is any one 'cure all' for alcoholism. But there are lots of things we can use to create safety nets and coping tools in our recovery.

I'm a big believer in meditation, especially in overcoming addiction. As alcoholics & addicts, we are not used to sitting with our thoughts and feelings, slit is a very uncomfortable and sometimes scary experience - we are so used to just numbing them. Meditation helps us to be mindful and present in each moment, sitting still with feelings that wash over us, uncomfortable or not.

In the rehab I was at last year we did guided meditations every day as a part of our recovery. It was great, but you have to be committed to it - like you've got to want to do it properly, otherwise it's a waste of time.

It's worth looking up mindfulness & meditation IMO.
