• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi Streampaws.

Zyprexa caused me to gain an enormous amount of weight. Geodon caused me to have horrible side effects, like vomiting and extreme sleepiness. I didn't do too good on Abilify, either. None of the newer antipsychotic medications worked very well for me, but thankfully, a low dose of Haldol (2.5mg) is working very well for me. I don't have harsh side effects from it, and it controls my symptoms very well. It has kept me out of the hospital! Haldol is an older medication, but it works very well for me without my needing to take extra medication for side effects. I am so thankful for Haldol. Have you ever tried it?

I hope you find a medicine that helps you as much as Haldol helps me, and I hope you feel better soon.

Shawn

Thank you for your words. Oh no on the weight thing. My doctor was trying to keep me off ones that cause weight gain. I have that problem already without another medication mucking it up. Geodon worked for a while and then just stopped, and it caused tremors so that wasn't any good. Abilify hasn't done any side effects, it just isn't working. I haven't tried Haldol, sounds like it could be one that I could try. I am just tired of the voices and paranoia :(

from my experience they dont ever completely go away.....I had a doctor who prescribed me straterra, an add medication for concentration, and that takes care of half the condition. Once you find a anti-psychotic that works decently, Try using a non addictive/hallucinogenic concentration medication, from my best advice. Also, prayer is the power of the one true God.

I will try that as soon as I find an anti-psychotic that works. Thank you for the suggestion of the concentration medication, I will talk to my doctor about that. Yes, you will not get any where without prayer :)

Anybody ever tried Zyprexa? I have been on Geodon and am now on Abilify but it is not working. So anyways, I was just wondering if anybody had been on Zyprexa...:confused:

Yes I have tried all those 3 as well they didn't work though

Zyprexa - pushed in a hole, and made me depressed, sullen and could not keep the voices away.

Geodon - drove me utterly mad within days.

Abilify - stabilised my moods somewhat but didn't stop the voices or hallucination and made me very fat.

As a matter of fact no medications could get rid of my voices - but God's Word alive in my heart did!

Please don't get me wrong medication can help enormously, but The word Alive in Love for God, yourself and your neighbour no medications can beat!

The Word alive within means hearing The word in love for God, yourself and the other.

For once I started eating The bible - believing The word unconditionally and placing His Word in His Spirit of Loving Truth within me - Satan screaming at me all the time began to die - bit by bit - and is now completely gone - 3 years after I began to eat The Word like this - though he has tried to get back in - The word keeps him out!

I read The Word until He became alive - I heard Him speak The Truth within my love for God, myself and my neighbour.

Though I still get psychosis - it has become peaceful bliss to how it use to be - even with angels singing God's praises at times - and no more horrible voices at all nor evil hallucinations - though I suffered from them for 38 years on a daily basis.:clap::clap::clap:

All praise to The Lamb.

Psalm 21

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

O LORD, the king rejoices in your strength.
How great is his joy in the victories you give!
You have granted him the desire of his heart
and have not withheld the request of his lips.

Selah

You welcomed him with rich blessings
and placed a crown of pure gold on his head.

He asked you for life, and you gave it to him—
length of days, for ever and ever.

Through the victories you gave, his glory is great;
you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty.

Surely you have granted him eternal blessings
and made him glad with the joy of your presence.

For the king trusts in the LORD;
through the unfailing love of the Most High
he will not be shaken.

Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies;
your right hand will seize your foes.

At the time of your appearing
you will make them like a fiery furnace.
In his wrath the LORD will swallow them up,
and his fire will consume them.

You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
their posterity from mankind.

Though they plot evil against you
and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed;

for you will make them turn their backs
when you aim at them with drawn bow.

Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength;
we will sing and praise your might.

My mum's on zyprexa, and she reckons that it's the best medication she's ever been on. The voices and screams are much quieter and no where near as frequent, there's no onslaught of evil stuff either; the voices she does hear are more morally neutral.

The downsides for her are dogmatic-ly sticking to 1500 calories a day, and the fatigue. The fatigue gets better with time though. Oh, and when she started on them, for the first few weeks she was really dizzy and couldn't walk. Overall she recommends them highly.

Good luck in your choice!

Has anyone tried Seroquol succesfully? I was on it for only like 7 days before quitting. I'm currently on Risperdal which takes away everything but I find it difficult to think and it messes with my emotions. So I'm thinking of going back to Seroquol. Any advice?

Seroquel wasn't any good to me - it caused my legs to swell and my liver to multifunction Though others have been helped by it more successfully. For me Risperdal has been more successful.

I don't know how long or how heavy your dosage of Risperdal is - but I found that higher than anything above 2 m.g - I have been upto 7 mg of Risperdal - had this deadening feeling as you describe - especially on my sex drive - but lower dosages worked better for me - indeed better than all the other medications I tried - around 2 m.g - 1.5 m.g worked best for me - and I know of others who use even less yet very successfully.

I found that to get an accurate picture with psych medications we need to try it for a few months at least - unless we get sick or it has an overly deadening effect on us - before we can know how well it works. As it takes our minds - and therefore our moods - usually 4 or 5 weeks to adjust to a new drug - and at times even longer than that.

So perhaps instead of stopping Risperdal you might see if a reduction helps you.

At one time before I was treated by a neuropsychiatrist I was on it. I had not had my diagnosis yet.It did nothing for me. (Paranoid Schizophrenic). I am using Haldol 5 mg,Lamictal 450 mg a day,Seroquel 900 mg at bedtime,Amantadine 100 mg. The only problems I have is I am groggy at times.I may be coming off Seroquel next month.
