Thank you my friends.

Let me begin by making clear that any knowledge I currently have about WOF is second hand.

I have been told that WOF teaches that Jesus became a sinner or else he could not have died a sacrificial death. Is this accurate?

No, absolutely not. Jesus was a perfect man, sinless from birth and throughout His life through death on the cross. To my knowledge, 100% of Word/Faith ascribe to this.

Where this misconception comes about is how Jesus deals with our sins. And with this there is no consensus in the Word/Faith groups.
1 Corinthians 5:21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
The common interpretation here by orthodox Christianity is that our sin was laid upon Jesus or some say laid upon His head.

Some orthodox Christians believe that Jesus suffered our sins (the Harrowing of Hell) there on the cross (typical in Calvinistic belief); in this mode of belief Jesus suffers hell on the cross, dies and goes immediately to heaven while his body goes to the grave. Others believe that Jesus carried those sins and descended into hell (see the Apostles Creed; more typical in Arminian beliefs; WoF stems much later out of this line); in this mode of belief Jesus pays the price for our sin on the cross then descends into hell for three days prior to resurrection. Many different theories exist as to the three days and what part our sin plays in that time.

There are some in spirit-filled charismatic history, and Word/Faith therein, that believe that Jesus literally became sin for us ("[God] made [Jesus] who knew no sin to be sin"). This latter has been made more of an issue in camps such as Kenneth Copeland Ministries. Btw, I happen to also believe this latter, for it seems the most literal translation of the Greek for this verse.

It must be stressed, though, that those who believe that Jesus was "made to be sin" do NOT believe that Jesus was made to be a sinner. Jesus NEVER sinned, and Adam's original sin did not touch Him.

It also must be stressed that this ("Jesus became our literal sin") is not a doctrine within Word/Faith. You will find some who ascribe to it, and you will find others who do not. But nonetheless it creates a misconception about Word/Faith created by those whose only goal is to disparage others beliefs, and Word/Faith is one of their targets.

He took our sin on himself without ever committing a sin himself...

Ok that is what I have always taught and believed, it is scriptural.

Next question; Is it a WOF teaching that one must speak in other tongues to attain salvation?

no, absolutely not! nor could you find any reference to that belief in the bible.

attaining salvation is a totally different matter from speaking in tongues.

No. I have never heard that taught anywhere. What Scripture would they use to make such a claim?

I believe they point to Acts 2: 38. Please know that I am only starting to investigate here. I was told that TD Jakes teaches this and that he is a WOF preacher.

There are a number of Scriptures that conflict with a teaching like this.
Appollos 18:24 was teaching but did not know about the Holy Spirit.
Acts 19:2 Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" If Paul needed to ask then it is possible to be saved without tongues.
1 Cor 12:30 Not all speak in tongues.

Now the possibility of tongues could be there at salvation.

Oneness Pentecostal believe this as I am looking for some Scriptures.

I have to be honest, this is the first time I have ever heard this question and the answer is an emphatic no, of course you do not need to speak in tongues to be a christian... But my question is... why would you want to be a christian that doesn't speak in tongues?

no, T.D. Jakes is not a WOF preacher, though many have mistaken him for one. i believe that he is oneness Pentecostal, and they do believe that speaking in tongues is a necessary sign of being saved.

but equating tongues as being necessary for salvation is far from being a WOF belief.

Uncle Tommy:

Virtually no-one in WOF circles believes this. This is a common UPC doctrine, (United Pentecostal Church), and exists in some other holiness Pentecostal groups, but not in WOF. I say 'virtually no-one' because, I don't know everyone on WOF circles. There may be someone somewhere that is WOF and believes this; however, I have been in WOF for 15 years now, and I have never heard a WOF minister espouse such a thing.

Most WOF believe that speaking in tongues is an ability that is inabled when one is Baptized in the Holy Spirit, much the same as any mainline Pentecostal group or denomintaion.

Peace...

I believe they point to Acts 2: 38. Please know that I am only starting to investigate here. I was told that TD Jakes teaches this and that he is a WOF preacher.

Part of the problem in defending WOF positions is that the critics tend to not be very honest in their critisisms. They often lump all TV evangelists into the WOF camp, but alot of them are not WOF. While TD Jakes sometimes minister with and associates himself with some that identify with WOF, he himself is not. Interestingly, I just heard the other day that TD Jakes has left the oneness theology and now believes in the Trinity. This would be a departure for him, and a welcome one, if true.

You show alot of wisdom coming here yourself, to hear from the horses mouth, so to speak, what we believe. You may or may not agree with the answers that we give you, but we will give you honest answers.

Peace...
