  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

May I have some input please?

Explain to me please... Why does the Baptist Church "have" to be linked with Protestant, and yet the Orthodox... actually left under protest and get to stay free of the Protestant label. Do you just like them better?

Catholics say the Orthodox left (or were kicked out). The Orthodox say the same about the Catholics. I've read some say that "the Orthodox were the first Protestants," but that's a Catholic view.

I agree with you that any church that starts on its own, without breaking off from the Catholic Church or one of its derivatives, is not a Protestant in the traditional sense. The willingness on this board to give the Orthodox a separate category, but not Baptists, is probably to reinforce the importance (in our view) of being an/the original Church, traced back to the 1st century.

I think one big difference is that the Orthodox broke off 500 years before "Protestantism" began, which started with the teachings of Luther, Calvin, and their contemporaries.

Also, the Orthodox do maintain apostolic succession, as they believe in Tradition and the liturgy as sacrifice. The Anglicans lost apostolic succession when they changed the ordination ritual, so they'd fall into the Protestant category.

The Orthodox (and I'm sure someone will correct me on this if I'm wrong, as I'm not really familiar with Orthodox beliefs) mostly believe the same things Catholics do, except for the authority of the Pope and the Filioque. They tend to leave things such as transubstantion and the Marian doctrines more undefined, but they do believe in them. Most Protestants don't, at least not at the denominational level.

How did this turn into this conversation to begin with?

An Orthodox Sistern comes in and posts a sisterlink and asks a question for us to help with input.... and it turns into a debate as to whether the Orthodox were the Original Protestants................................

Even according to the Church they are not protestants they are in schism and that is different.... please do some homework people....

You guys are not making a whole lot of sense to me.

Why can't we have Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Baptist?
Because, all opinions and debates aside, when you look at the Catholic/Orthodox issue objectively, there is a question of who left who. With Protestants, it's clear who left who and the majority of Protestants will admit it. Of course, I'm sure there are some really far out on the fringe who would claim that the Catholic Church left the Protestant faith in the 16th century. ;)

NOTE: I am not debating who left who. I'm simply stating that both Catholic and Orthodox claim the other left so there is a question there. There is no such question with Protestants.
